Chateau de Sommieres

The castle of the lords of Anduze and Sauve (12th-13th centuries), symbolized by the Bermond tower, was turned into a royal fortress in the 13th century under Louis IX (Saint Louis). The buldings changed as the centuries went by and with the civil war between Catholics and Protestants The remains of the defensive functions of the castle can still be seen-a tower, a gate, arrow slits, a ramparts walk and dwelling quarters. Impressive spiral stairs to the top of the 25-metre keep. View of the town and the Vidourle Valley (panels in English). In the royal chapel, a 12-minute film (sub-titles in English) and a video animation take you back in time. --- Opening hours (last entry one hour before castle closing time) APRIL 3rd TO 14th Monday to Friday, 14:00 to 17:00. SUMMER SEASON -> June 19th to 30th, and September 4th to 8th Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 13:00 / 14:00 to 17:00. -> July 1st to September 1st Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10:00 to 13:00 / 15:00 to 19:00. We visited the town on a Sat market morning also thinking that an advertised medieval event also occurs on the first weekend in April. Well no sign of the event. The Sat market however is very good. The town and the bridge are very interesting to be capped off by a visit to the Chateau. It is very impressive and was closed so we could not go inside. Almost anyone should be able to access the chateaux as the walk is not tough (at least two methods)and there is limited parking at the front and back of the chateaux. Highly recommend visiting the Church mid way from the town to the Chateaux. It is without a doubt the darkest church we have ever visited in Europe but one of the most decorated/colorful we have seen.

Roman Bridge

Reviewed By Timothy W - Silver Spring, MD

If you just look at the bridge over the river, it is nothing exciting. However the bridge, constructed in Roman times, became a toll bridge in medieval times and buildings were built on top of the bridge, like the Ponte Vecchio in Venice. You can't see it at first glance because the town built up around the bridge. Go through the gate at the Marie and then down the steps to the left and there you are, you can see the bridge! All the plaques, in both English and French, explain what is going on. And you can see the bridge curving down to ground level when it kind of dead ends at the end of the medieval street. One of the few medieval Bridges left with buildings on top. And you can see the original Roman stone structure when you go under the bridge. Worth seeing the real bridge, not just the 'modern bridge' across the river.
