What to do and see in Skowhegan, Maine (ME): The Best Things to do

January 24, 2022 Florencio Paulino

Skowhegan /skaʊˈhiːɡən/ is the county seat of Somerset County, Maine, United States. Skowhegan was originally inhabited by the indigenous Abenaki people who named the area Skowhegan, meaning "watching place [for fish]." The native population was massacred or driven from the area during the 4th Anglo-Abenaki War. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 8,589. Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture is an internationally known residency program for artists, though it is technically located in neighboring East Madison. Every August, Skowhegan hosts the annual Skowhegan State Fair, the oldest continuous state fair in the United States.

Bigelow Brewing Company

Bigelow Brewing has a belief that beer can and should be about a place. We strive to make beer from our community, using local ingredients to feel a sense of ownership of where we live. We are committed to our local community and hope it influences our customers to expect that from their beer. It is important that every beer Bigelow Brewing produces is made with malts that are grown in Maine. Fruits and vegetables are from local farmers. One of the things we love about Maine and specifically the Skowhegan community, is how local customers and businesses support one another. Using local products is a chance to support small farmers and preserve our agricultural heritage.

Had a chance to visit this place for the first time the other day. Really really was impressed the way they refurbished the old Horsebarn that they were in. The atmosphere is really really cool so clean really nice. The beer absolutely fantastic. They have some very cool pizza that’s wood fired. They also do a Sunday brunch . Ya gotta check this place out.

In a time when so many breweries have succumbed to the "hazy IPA' craze Oak Pond Brewing sticks to their carefully brewed lagers. While I appreciate and drink a wide variety of beer styles, Oak Pond is one of the only breweries in Maine brewing Bavarian/German style (malt-forward) brews. They use true lager yeast and take the time to cold-condition their beer for many weeks. The results are truly amazing "clean" and malty creations that are true-to-style. Housed in an old barn a few miles outside of Skowhegan, don't let modest facilities fool you - Nancy and Adam know how to brew. While much of the modern craft brewing world focuses on glitzy brew pubs, Oak Pond Brewing Company focuses on beer quality.
