I wouldn't recommend climbing up to the top of the fort. The route is a rocky thin climb with no safety barriers and very steep!

Manthal Buddha Rock

Reviewed By Mypace - Zurich, Switzerland

Visiting two research stations in Skardu (Mountain Agricultural Research Station and Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research), we came across a sign to this ancient historical site of painted Buddha in rock. It is on the way to Satpara leading to the beautiful Lake of same name.
Buddhists settled in north-western Pakistan around Peshawar the region was known as Gandhara. When these people migrated and made temporary settlements as they went through areas, they carved drawings of stupas, scenes of their experiences and images of Buddha with texts in Kharoshti language . There were a number of such Buddhist rock carvings and stupas from Taxila right up to Jalalabad.
Fortunately, all in present Pakistan are preserved and protected as national heritage in museums and even in open spaces, the Manthal Buddha Rock being one such site.
