The Mound of Zvelgaitis

The mound of Zvelgaitis – the most spectacular part of the ridge. The mound is named after the famous Lithuanian Duke Zvelgaitis, whose name was mentioned in 12th – 13th century documents. It is thought that the castle of Duke Zvelgaitis stood on the mound. Legends say that there was an underground tunnel joining the mounds of Zvelgaitis and Raktuve.

Kryziu Kalnas

Reviewed By cooker3000 - Dublin, Ireland

I visited here after staying in Siaulia overnight. If you don't have your own transport it's tricky to do this as a daytrip from either Riga or Vilnius. It's possible but it would be a very long day. There are regular buses from the main bus station that take about 40 minutes to small bus shelter, from there it's about 2km to the actual hill itself. I knew there would be a lot of crosses but really staggered by how many. I can't even imagine how many. It's a really striking, unique place and I'd highly recommend visiting if at all possible.Try visiting early in morning or in evening if possible as it was pretty busy when I visited.

Sundial Square

The extraordinary 750th anniversary of the city's existence in 1986 motivated the proper acknowledgment of the significance of this date. The competition for the reconstruction of the square was announced in 1981, and it was won by a trio of architects from Siauliai: A. Eerniauskas, R. Jurela and A. Vysniunas. The centrepiece of Sundial Square is the gilded and bronze-ornamented decorative sculpt

The length of the mound is 95 meters, the width – 43 meters. People lived there in the 1st – 13th centuries. The mound was first mentioned in the chronicle in 1198 as Racken or Rackette. Agailiai forest, Kursenai 81103 Lithuania +370 41 370860 [email protected] https://www.siauliurajonas.lt/lankytinos-vietos/agailiu-koplycia/

The first wooden chapel in the depth of Agailiai forest was built back in serfdom times. Participants of the rebellion of 1863 were burried at this chapel. Local people believing this place to be miraculous erected crosses for a long time there. In 1939, a concrete church with a roof from wooden planks was built there which was set on fire during the World War II.
