Oreshek Fortress

Located at the head of the Neva, Shlisselburg is a short day trip from St. Petersburg. What a find!! Rich in history and situated in a stunning location. Oreshek fortress held out against the Nazis for nearly 500 days during the Siege of Leningrad & ruins of the prison chapel are a memorial to this feat. The Tsar's Tower, the oldest surviving section of the fortress is quite imposing. A fact of which I was unaware prior to my visit: Lenin's brother, Alexander Ulyanov, was hanged here for treason in 1887 at the New Prison (1884). A plaque shows the site of his execution. Highly recommend a visit to this fascinating fortress!

View good diorama, showing key events of the battle to breach the Leningrad Blockade. Those unfamiliar with the history of the blockade, would likely need a local guide to explain the significance of each part of the diorama.
Visited here as part of a full day tour exploring battles around the siege of Saint Petersburg - I don't think you'd bother coming here just for the diorama, but it's certainly worth it as part of a package tour, likely incorporating the Road of Life museum and other memorial sites along the road.

Shlisselburg (Oreshek) Fortress

Located on an island not far from Shlisselburg, the Oreshek fortress was founded in the 14th century. After it was recaptured from the Swedes by Peter I in 1702, it became a key fortress protecting St. Petersburg and a high-security prison.

If you plan to go to Shlisselburg (otherwise called Petrokrepost), you have to see the Oreshek fortress. Boat leave daily by the edge of the Neva River. Be prepared to bring a windbraker/jacket for the trip, since it can get quite chilly. The area surrounding Shlisselburg is full of 'dachas', or Russian farms/country homes. This is where typical Russian workers escape to for some peace and quiet. You'll see some quite, quaint houses to sprawling mansions. Once you arrive in Shlisselburg (by the church) take the main road that goes right, and keep on going straight until you're passing a canal. You'll go up a steep hill, with farm houses on your right, the canal on your left, until you're surrounded by land. Take any right hand turn after the hill to enter the dacha lands. Generally, Shlisselburg was a town built after world war 2, as you can see by the numbers painted on the fronts of the apartment buildings. It's definitely worth going to to see some typical russian country life, and to visit the oreshek fortress. Some people get confused, and think that they arrived at the wrong place when they find the city of Shlisselburg to be full of brick buildings, not dachas. You have to follow that main road that I was talking about to the outskirts of the city to get to the dachas. Hopefully that'll clear things up. The only place that I know of where you can get internet access is at the post office, the first building that you see immediately after turning onto the main street after passing the church. Rates vary, but it's generally cheap. The only connection offered is dial-up. There are no restaurants, since this is a mostly residential town, but you'll find little shops here and there and markets where you can buy anything, and make a meal out of it. Enjoy!

There are only ruins left from the Cathedral, as most of the fortress was destroyed during WW II. Today it is a kind of memorial to the defenders of the great patriotic war.
