Shelbyville, the county seat of Bedford County, was laid out in 1810 and incorporated in 1819. The town is a hub of the Tennessee Walking Horse industry and has been nicknamed "The Walking Horse Capital of the World".

Have been a member for two years and work out thru the week. The people that work there are helpful and friendly and I enjoy meeting new people. Kathy is the lady that helps you in the gym to understad how to work the machines.

This is a museum solely dedicated to the history and heritage of the Tennessee Walking Horse. From November thru March we are open from 10am to 4pm Friday and Saturday. From April thru October we are open from 10am to 4pm Thursday thru Saturday. We will schedule tours on other days with a 2 week notice.

I am a born and bred Tennesseean who hasn't lived there for almost forty-two years. Every summer our small town had a horse show; not just any horses....we had the beautiful Tennessee Walking horses.
I was so pleased to see when preparing for our trip "home" to find out there's a museum. The Tennessee Walking Horse National Museum to be proper. It's in the small town of Wartrace. I understand it is more important in the history of the horses than Shelbyville, where the Celebration takes place.
The museum is in a historic block of buildings right across from the train station. It's in the old funeral home. The upstairs is not used by the museum as that's where the coffins were made and stored.... It's just one floor and it might take thirty minutes reading most of the exhibits.
Having grown up watching them one night a year, it was a pure joy to see all the wonderful pictures and ribbons. I also found out the name of a rider I'm pretty sure I helped give the trophy named in honor of my great-grandfather to. One of the main docents wants me to send a picture of that night if I can find it. We'll see...over fifty-years ago????
The museum is small, it won't take a lot of time but if you love walking horses, you will enjoy your time here. Have cash as they don't take credit cards and they did take a check for a tee shirt I bought. (Admission was just $4 each).
The docents know what they're talking about and will gladly answer questions. Perhaps Roscoe the one-eyed pug will be "working"....he's a rescue, a sweetheart and he too, loves horses.

We were met by Diana (hope I got it right) who was just loaded with facts about the location, the history and the current status of this distillery. Small tour groups started off in the store area. We were told that the Post Office was housed at the George Dickel Distillery and so we filled out post cards to mail to family and friends to get the on them. No stamps needed - all supplied by Dickel's. Total tour took about 90 minutes to include the "tasting" at the end. Just don't think you're on the wrong road on your way there because it turns into 2 lanes and some of it is a bit rough - unlike the WHISKY (no "e" in their name) which is smooth

This is a nice little park near the Courthouse Square. An old hydroelectric plant and the dam are the main features of the park. Which is a visual delight! Overall it is a pleasant little park for a picnic or to read a good book and is a well known "fishing hole". Be cautious, as flooding may take place during heavy rain periods. No bathroom facilities are available and food may be purchased from merchants located in the Courthouse Square area.

I was pretty shocked reading the negative reviews. We had a great time with Float-A-Boat. Mind you, this is Wartrace, TN. It's a little country, and helping people load the kayaks is just common courtesy!
We arrived for our 11 o'clock time. They had us drive our cars to the last point & dropped us off at the beginning. We road in a van, no truck beds. Kayaks were nice. It took us around 4.5 hrs. We called them when we reached the end & it was 15 min before they arrived. We helped them load up the kayaks. It was a great experience. We'll be back!

We came out to visit the Distillery and found them on a whim. Such a great story and history. Moreover, the attention to detail and quality really does set them apart from other companies. Mr. Thomas was an amazing host that showed his operation. So much fun. I️ recommend stopping by if you are in the neighborhood.

Hourly Horse Back Rides around the beautiful 150 acre farm, beginners and groups welcome. More experienced riders are also welcome. We start with a short lesson in the indoor arena then when everyone is comfortable we go out on the guided trails around the farm. Various breeds of horses to choose from. We were there because of a Jack Brainard horse clinic. The place is just beautiful. The rooms that you can rent are very nice and priced right. Unfortunately we waited to long and had to stay in a hotel in town. The whole facitily is great. Check out their website for all the functions they have going on.
The stalls and barn are amazing!
