What to do and see in Scottish Highlands, Scotland: The Best Horseback Riding Tours

June 17, 2021 Kiesha Cripe

The moody, romantic Scottish Highlands start at Loch Lomond just north of Glasgow. Comprising a slew of mountain ranges, this sparsely populated land is best seen by train on the West Highland Line. Mountains, lochs, bright heather and rhododendrons give way to white sand beaches and rugged coves as the train nears Mallaig. For a more active take on the region, hike the West Highland Way or visit the Trossachs National Park. Ben Nevis, a popular climbing spot, looms over the town of Fort William.

Booked my wife and 2 girls (11 and 9) for a lesson at Star Stables having seen previous recommendations. I booked in advance to make sure they could definitely go. Kirsteen was very friendly and welcoming from the outset and clearly very passionate about horses. The girls loved the ride out around the local lanes and we will definitely be back next year. Thanks again.

I have had the most wonderful morning out riding with Candy, the horse she put me on was steady and safe and incredibly well schooled which made the ride even nicer (still up for buying him if he’s ever up for sale!) The ride itself was mainly off road which as a nervous hacker was perfect for me, I did get into a flap a couple of times and Candy was excellent at dealing with me (even when I forgot my left and rights!) During the ride itself Candy gave me loads of tips to improve my riding too so I feel like I’ve had a lesson as well as a beautiful ride. When I first got on the horse I told her which element of my position I had got rusty with and she explained in a way no other instructor had before how to fix it and it immediately clicked. She also explained the landscape we were riding through making it more of an experience too. As we rode past the pub candy recommended a visit to recover from our long ride - which we did and was a lovely place to sit and let my legs recover! I went on the longest ride candy offers and I enjoyed every single second of it. Because of the fact only experienced riders are allowed to undertake the ride, we had a fast paced ride with loads of stretches of cantering along the loch and through some beautiful woodland and heathland and it was beautiful - this made the ride not feel like pony trekking and made it even more special. Social distances and sanitation procedures were in place throughout (which really isn’t a problem on a horse) but candy ensured we all stayed safe through our visit! I will be back - and I can’t wait!!! Thank you so much for a lovely morning. (I forgot to take photos from the horse because I was too engaged with the ride to even think about my phone but the pictures I took from the pub give you an idea of how beautiful the ride is)

My six years old son, who was a complete novice with horses, enjoyed the half day special at stables and is already looking forward to have more similar experience. He enjoyed all activities he was involved with, which included not only trekking horses but also grooming and preparing food for them, and cleaning stables too. At the end of session my son received a rosette and we got him also a souvenir with a photograph of horse he was riding on that day. It is recommended to arrive 15 minutes prior session to fill in a form and prepare child for session. Strongly recommended if around in this remote location.

Just had the most amazing day with Highland trekking and trail riding. Despite the rain the views were spectacular, the ponies were delightful and clearly very happy and well cared for whilst Iain was a fantastic guide with a seemingly endless well of knowledge about local history, flora and fauna and ecological debates/rewilding projects. I really can't recommend enough and will definitely be back :)

We had a fantastic family day out riding the beautiful ponies. Shelagh and the girls were fantastic. They took great care of the inexperienced riders and everyone chatted and laughed all the way. We walked along the road to reach the beautiful Silver sands. The horses were all very well behaved and happily took us along the beach to take in the fantastic scenery. We stopped along the way for a few photos too. It was so great to get out and do something fun. We’ll definitely be back in the Summer!
