Santuario Santa Maria a Mare

Reviewed By Marigatta - Fairfield, Connecticut

This lovely church sits majestically by the sea and bears the name of the blessed mother within: Santa Maria a Mare. Dating back to the 1800's this parish has welcomed many families from this small fishing village. Upon entering, if you turn your back to the altar there are plaques on the wall giving ( in Italian) a brief historical timeline from the church's inception to current status as sanctuary.
Modestly decorated this parish maintains a humble status. Buttercup yellow walls cast a soft glow down the isles and around the marble altar where your eyes are drawn to the beautiful statue of Mary. The parish priest, Monsignor Luigi, had her vestments restored to the statue's original colors which were deeper in blue and crimson.
Statues of other saints grace the interior walls.
Children are most welcome and often the Monsignor gathers the little ones around the altar.
Most notable to me were the charismatic voices of the choir chanting, singing and praising.
Occasionally after an 8 am Sunday mass, women from the parish sell artisan goods and donate the proceeds to charity. This small venue is accessed by an entrance directly across from Hotel Sonia by the beach- if you stand in front of the church, go to your left.

Lido Castellabate

Bathhouse with Lido Restaurant and Bar

After nine wonderful and moderately to very busy weeks in twelve settings, I was looking forward to returning to the grand slam of San Marco Castallabate, Santa Maria Castallabate, Castellabate atop and Agropoli as a relaxed return to my past. Here our family had spent nearly two full summer months in ’88 and ’89 when my sons were younger primary school students. To return meant a little nostalgia as well.
I was confident that, although the three Castallabate villages and Agropoli would have changed somewhat, the essential character of each would remain intact. This proved generally true, though the accidental changes to each (and most especially Agropoli), made getting precise bearings alternately tricky, somewhat difficult or impossible in each case.
Some of what was best in each is gone, and much of what is new is lovely in its own way. Np one in the street anywhere roasts chickens over open dry grapevines with chunks of rosemarin under the skin and in the cavity. No trucks arrive in the piazzas on Saturday mornings to fill five liter plastic jugs of wine for the equivilent of E2. Kids don’t tend to walk down the road daily to stop at a bread store, and a cheese/milk shop, and thus accumulate (then 100 lire) coins as pay for their neon lit electric arcade games on Friday nights before pizza. Most of all. there was no GPS, no internet, no cells phones, no disco clubs and little tv.
Yet so much of the three villages and centro Agropoli above (sopra) retain their heart, despite the incursions of modern "convenience". No disrespect intended, but to visit the seaside in the winter and then speak of little to do or whatever less than positively seems a little ironic and curious. I'll leave it at that with such comments I read.
Walking along the beach in any of these three seaside settings when the weather is blustery and challenging or coolingly accommodating can be a great photo op as well as energizing. To have all this shoulder to shoulder in such convenient proximity makes for wonderful week's setting, but please: don't ask too much of the winter if not skiing somewhere, OK?
