Teatro La Caridad

Reviewed By unclelouie - Minnesota

This old theatre looks nice from the outside but is a 19th century beauty on the inside. It is right on the main plaza (Parque Vidal) and was a CUC or two to get inside. We mostly walked around inside including to an upper floor and sat in a couple of the chairs for a bit of a rest also. There were not many inside and a woman whom we paid for the admission followed us briefly and described a bit and in limited English. She made no effort to ask for a tip. It's certainly worth a half hour of your time to see one of the best preserved old Theaters in Cuba.

Parque Leoncio Vidal

Great place to check out normal, everyday people from Santa Clara. Kids, elderly, locals, tourists... everyone seems to hang out here. The buildings surrounding the plaza are special, especially those that have been maintained/restored. There's a Wi-Fi hotspot in the park, which one can connect to with the Wi-Fi card that's sold throughout the country.

Mausoleo del Che Guevara

Reviewed By Vern D

We traveled a long way from Varadero to Santa Clara to visit this important memorial to Che Guevara. It was worth it. Some of our tour group were frankly, embarrassing inside the mausoleum (talking inside!!!!) but this was pure ignorance - not the fault of our tour guide.
Don't expect huge things from the site. It's not meant to be a Disney-like attraction for tourists - it's a respectful, solemn memorial site for one of socialism's and Cuba's biggest heroes.

Great open-air nightclub with a transvestite show in an incredible decor! Probably the only place where gay and straight people openly mix. A must-see for anyone curious about how Cuban society is evolving.

Loma del Capiro

Our guide took us there as it was a place used by Che Guevara as a command center at the battle of Santa Clara during the Cuban revolution. What he didn't mention was that to get there you had to climb up over 200 stairs and then back down again over 200 stairs. But, it was worth it

Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado

This boxcar museum, east on Independencia just over the river, marks the spot where 18 men under the command of Che Guevara, equipped with rifles and grenades, captured a 22-car armored train containing 350 heavily armed Batista troops. Amazingly, this battle, which took place on December 29, 1958, only lasted 90 minutes. The bulldozer that the guerrillas used to cut the railway line is on a pedestal nearby.

It is a small yard, with wagons showing pictures and exhibits about the event with the train during the revolution. Interesting place, small and pleasant.

Some 10-15 min walk from the main Santa Clara Sq. is this beautiful Spanish style Cathedral. It rises high above the one storey houses around, and looks magnificent not belonging to the neighborhood.
The facade is nice but needs a renovation, while the interior looks simple and clean.
After visiting it, stroll the streets around to get a glimpse of everyday peoples life.

If you are into Spanish Archetecture, then this is a must see. They have many pieces from the several periods. The tour is normally in Spanish, so be prepared if you don't speak Spanish.
The courtyard is awesome and all the rooms empty into it.
The method of capturing water is very interesting. The tour takes about 30 minutes and their is a charge of 1-2 CUC per person.

Fabrica de Tabacos Costantino Perez Carrodegua

The tour cost $15 and was about 15minutes long, which felt quite short however is only a small factory. Very interesting to see and learn about the cigars, how they get the distinct flavour etc. You could stop and ask questions if you had any after the tour.
The cigar shop across the road sells the products from the factory.
