I have not been there for quite a while and forgotten how beautiful it is. Or perhaps it looks much better now than 20 years ago. Anyway, as the whole Sandomierz Old Town, the market avoided communist architeture and it is like walking around an Italian historical small town. Many shops and restaurants, quite crowded at weekends, Polish tourists prevail.

I came here in mid-July 2015 but the gaTE MUST STILL STAND.We drove here from Tarnobrzeg and parked just outside the Old Town, in the shadow of this fine gate. It is most imposing and a very fitting entrance to one of the loveliest towns in Poland. Dating from 14th century, it is full of history.

We enjoyed the Sandomierz Diocese Museum. Each of the seven galleries was a delight. The first gallery included a painting of Madonna and Child with St. Catherine by Lucas Cranach. Other galleries included bishop cloaks and poles, pottery, tiles, paintings, and armor. There was a cabinet of carved wooden books and a wonderful room of religious statuary. And a refectory with an antique organ. It's not a large museum, but it is a delightful discovery in Sandomierz.

The Dominican Church is famous for its story of 49 Dominican martyrs murdered here during the Tatar invasion in 1260. It is one of the oldest brick churches in Poland, in a unique Romano-Ghotic style, with beautiful stained glass windows and ceramic decorations on the outside. A very old linden tree in front of the church has its legend that says it was one of many linden trees planted around the property upside down so that the miracle comes (the previous landlord did not want to give his property to Church, and he finally agreed to give up if there is a miracle, and apparently it did happen...)

Some Polish friends took me around in the Sandomierski area in a sort of wine tour. I must confess that among the wineries that we visited, Sandomierska Winery offered me a wine that I liked more than all the other ones I tasted : I am talking about "Sandomirius". A full bodied red wine : a blend of Regent (80%) and Cabernet Cantor (20%). Fresh berries, herbs and a pleasant pepper after taste. To be honest I would have never expected to find such a good wine in Poland. We were warmly welcomed buy a very young guy who showed a great passion for his job ... and for sure his fondness and enthusiasm are transferred to the final product. If you are in the nearby do not miss to book a wine tasting. If you do not feel like driving ... the Winery offers three apartments for rent !
