What to do and see in San Sebastian - Donostia, Basque Country: The Best Things to do Good for Couples

June 9, 2021 Leida Jutras

While many visitors come for the beaches, arts celebrations and fiestas, San Sebastian-Donostia is serious about its food and drink. The Old Quarter’s narrow, winding streets are full of bars and restaurants, and in the modern city, sidewalk cafes are all around. The city specializes in seafood. Just make sure you know not to expect dinner at 6 or 7 p.m.—that’s much too early in Spain. Instead, tide yourself over with tapas, and enjoy eating and drinking late into the night.

Cooking Class "Delicious Pintxos of San Sebastián". Passion for Traditional Basque Cuisine. Learn to cook like a Local Chef.

A truly once in a lifetime experience for the food enthusiast seeking a non-pretentious class. (Spoiler free review!) The class starts with a walk up to Lander’s beautiful apartment near the water where he gives an excellent introduction to the local sourcing of ingredients. His English is excellent. Music was excellent throughout, it made me feel like I was in the home of a long time friend catching up. It felt personal and exciting. Lander was born and raised in San Sebastián and loves to travel. He taught in Japan for some years and you can tell by the artifacts he has brought back with him. I would like to learn more about seafood from him. He even incorporated Asian touches to the Basque dishes to elevate them. While one member of the class was late, Lander sat with us at a coffee shop and chatted with us. He did not rush the class as a result and even took more time after the class to show us some of the ingredients in the local grocery store. I will not mention what we ate so it can be a surprise! We made many dishes and were very full by the end. You can BYOB, but it is not necessary, he has water and and some local alcoholic beverages for you to try. Good for most ages and experience levels. The food was phenomenal. Some of the recipes were taken from the famous restaurants in San Sebastián that perfected the dishes. I ate at those bars and actually enjoyed the food better in Lander’s home. My advice: take lots of notes and come hungry! He provides pens. Pictures are allowed and encouraged. The kitchen was always clean and the class flowed well. He kept us busy and held our attention throughout. The room was neatly spread out with ample space for the 5 people in the class. Overall, the experience was worth 4-5 hours and it was worth every single dollar. I recommend this to everyone who visits this city. Do not be shy to ask questions, Lander is kind, humble, intelligent, and welcoming. I would love to take another class from him. The recipes were simple to follow and you get printed instructions to take home. There was no extra fluff to the dishes, just the essentials plus some secrets to make the most amazing dishes.
