What to do and see in San Jose, Province of San Jose: The Best Bus Transportation

May 12, 2022 Joeann Galban

Vibrant and packed with Victorian mansions, Costa Rica's rowdy, bustling capital was built on the profits of the coffee trade and working "golden bean" plantations still surround the city. Try freshly roasted local beans at Mercado Central. For shinier gold, visit the Museo del Oro. Many renovated landmarks now house stylish hotels. Usually viewed as a hub, rather than a destination, nightlife is concentrated in Spanish village-inspired El Pueblo. Don't miss the elegant 1897 National Theater.

We usually rent a car when we visit Costa Rica which is always a huge hassle. We decided on our most recent trip to try shuttles & boats to get us to and from the areas we were visiting. The airport shuttle we took from San Jose to Jaco was excellent. Our driver was there when we landed, helped with our luggage and provided a comfortable ride. He was very pleasant, and gave us some tips about the area, as we had not visited Jaco on prior trips. We used various different modalities to get round Costa Rica this trip (shuttle, boat, city bus, and an ATV) and all of the experiences were 100% better than any rental car company we have encountered in CR.

The prices are reasonable, the vans are comfortable, the drivers are nice and take care of your luggage, and it beats driving. They will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. We rode from San Jose to Monteverde to Tamarindo to San Jose on this trip – a couple of vans even had wi-fi. Most had good air conditioning. They provide you with one rest stop at a nice place – I especially liked stopping at La Finca because they have wild parrots and peacocks to enjoy. Here are a few important things to know: You must buy tickets at least 24 hours in advance – you can not just walk up and get a ticket. Do not try to contact them by e-mail – I never received an answer and could not reach them by phone either. Use Facebook messenger or WhatsApp, both worked for me which was very handy when I needed to change my ticket during the Coronavirus situation (and they were very nice, by the way, and made the changes promptly and without fee). Make sure you know where to meet your bus – we had a mix-up with the San Jose airport meeting place, but the driver of another bus was very nice, called our driver, and told him where to find us. Which brings me to my next point...do not expect your drivers to speak English. They are very nice guys who speak Spanish. Study now and be prepared! And enjoy your trip.

We took the Tracopa bus from San Jose to David on March 29, 2019. The price on their website says it’s $21 per person. When we got to the window it was $28 per person but that is because they add your Costa Rican EXIT FEE ($7) to the price of your ticket to make your border crossing easier and faster. I would recommend getting to the station at least 30 minutes in advance as it takes a bit of time to process your Exit Information for the border. There is nothing at this bus station though, so I recommend buying all your travel snacks ahead of time! Our bus driver was very kind, efficient and knowledgeable of the process. I typically get car sick but I shockingly managed to feel fine the entire ride. He was a good driver, the seats were comfortable and had AC. We stopped about 2 hours in for a 20 minute break where you could also purchase snacks, a small meal, or empanadas and use the toilets for the road. We also stopped around 12 for a thirty minute break for lunch in Uvita where there was a nice buffet restaurant and toilets. At the border you get off the bus and leave all of your bags to get stamped out of Costa Rica (make sure and show them your $7 exit receipt!) Then, again without your luggage you will walk about 5 minutes to the Panama side. Make sure you have proof of onward travel, copies of your passport! After you get stamped into Panama, the bus driver will drive the bus to the Panama side where you get all of your luggage off the bus. You then go through a series of custom checks and a baggage machine. Once you have passed all of the tests you then put your bags and yourself back on the bus! This entire process took our bus about 1.5 hours. We left San Jose at 7:30am and arrived in David at 6ish (be aware of the additional hour change crossing into Panama!)
