What to do and see in San Diego, California (CA): The Best Sports Complexes

September 22, 2021 Kaleigh Reichenbach

San Diego embodies laid-back California culture, complete with a Boardwalk, surfing communities, and outstanding Mexican food. Breathe in the fresh ocean air at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, then gobble down a fresh fish taco at a La Jolla seafood joint. The naval aircrafts at the USS Midway Museum will have you standing at attention. A free Sunday concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion is the perfect way to unwind after a Saturday night bar-hop in the thumping Gaslamp Quarter.

Plunge San Diego

Originally built in 1925, the historic Plunge Pool, was at the time, the largest salt water pool in the world holding 355,000 gallons of water. The 60 foot by 175 foot pool was designed after the Spanish Renaissance-style buildings in Balboa Park built in 1915 and 1916. The pool was converted to fresh water in 1940, when it then became the largest indoor heated pool in Southern California. Newly renovated in 2019, the aesthetics reflect floor to ceiling windows and a retractable roof, allowing swimmers to enjoy the warm San Diego weather all year long. The Plunge is located inside of Fit Mission Beach at Belmont Park, an ocean front family friendly amusement park. Open to the public with panoramic views, the Plunge welcomes swimmers of all ages.

I'm a regular lap swimmer- and traveler. Anytime I can find an interest place to swim a mile, I give it a try. The Plunge San Diego is simply fabulous. I swam in the old facility before the rebuild, and this new facility is first class. The lanes are wide and spacious and easily accommodate two swimmers without any chance of inadvertant collision. I heartily recommend the Plunge. I was also a bit worried that during this COVID lockdown that their protocols may be too lax. But they were wonderful. Felt very safe, and they only allowed 2 swimmers per lane. and I didn't even have to wait: several lanes only had a single swimmer, and my lane-sharer finished up after 10 minutes and I had the lane to myself (this was about 1 p.m.) I will go to the Plunge every time I'm in the area.

We’ve been to at least 10 other MLB stadiums and I have to say this and the Giants stadium are the two nicest. We viewed the game from 4 different locations in the stadium and all were great views. There are lots of activities for the kids out in center field and if weather is good, sit out on the grass hill in center and the view is awesome. I hope the Oakland A’s new stadium is half as nice as this one!

This was my first ever pay to play disc golf course and it was well worth it. Very well maintained grounds and a ton of different basket locations. It’s one of the original disc golf courses and you can definitely see why it’s popular. It was busy and I’m glad I went on a weekday. My local guide (nice random local, shoutout to Mike!) said weekend rounds can take three hours. Great pro shop and nice community. Worth the stop if you’re a disc golfer and have the time for sure. Also, you can rent discs so if you can pack yours it’s pretty cheap to get a couple forms round.
