Ancient City (Mueang Boran)

One of the world’s largest outdoor museums features a 200-acre city with 109 scaled-down copies of Thailand’s most famous monuments and architectural attractions.

Reviewed By mshian63 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Samut Prakan is located around 40km south east of Bangkok and it is a nice place for one day trip. The Muang Boran Ancient City is a place we must visit in this area. It is a very big museum park occupying over 200 acres in the shape of Thailand. The museum features more than 100 structures of Thailand's famous monuments and architectural attractions. These monuments are built and located geographically following the shape of Thailand. Some of the buildings are life-size replicas of existing or former sites, while others are scaled down. Since the park is too big to be covered by foot, it is advisable to rent the buggy which can carry 4 persons. We can operate the buggy on our own and we took 4 hours to cover the museum. For a more detail viewing of the museum may take up to 6 hours. There are many beatiful structures in nice surroundings for photography. Other places of interest that can be included in this day trip are the nice Wat Asokaram (temple), watching many sea gulls at Bangpu Recreation Centre, the huge reclining Buddha of Wat Bang Phli Yai Klang and the giant three headed elephant statue at Erawan Museum.

Wat Asokaram

The best thing is plenty of table fans in building. After the walk from Kheha station, it was a relief to dry sweat. I like to walk or take public transport like buses, bts totally avoiding bike taxis. though after sunset, the building steps leading to meditation hall are very windy. I also liked the chandeliers in meditation hall, very beautiful indeed.

Wat Bang Phli Yai Klang

Reviewed By Jeff206 - Samut Prakan, Thailand

To think that this wat is located not far from where I live, and had never visited all this time, it was certainly a temple worth the trip! I went into both the stupa (the bell shaped structure) as well as the actual temple across the street, and both were VERY grand and amazing that this wonder exists away from the much more well known temples in Bangkok! I think the most iconic feature in the stupa, is the giant happy Buddha! You can also go up a total of 6 stories all the way to the top and where eventually, the way up becomes a continuous spiral walkway.

Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park And Botanical Garden

Reviewed By treamprom - Bangkok, Thailand

Normally, I drove to Pattaya or may be Amphawa or Hua Hin but this time we tried Bang Kachao or Sri Nahkhon Khuen Khan Park and Botanical Garden in Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan instead. See from the many reviews, you may also take BTS [Stop at Bang Na station] then you take the boat and you may rent a bike to go to this park, water market and explore this little island or so called 'The Green Lung of Bangkok' too. But as you know, we drove and rent a whole day bike [THB 50 per bike per day], we also bought some water and food to go along and the mission is only to bike, to stop for photos and to enjoy! Nice, fabulous, energy boosting and fun! Why? There are so many green stuffs, pond, birds and a lot of places for you to take nice photos to post on your social media. Try one day and you'll like it - See our great shots!

Pom Phra Chulachomklao

Reviewed By Traveler816995 - Marazion, United Kingdom

We have just returned from a visit to Chulachomklao fort after first reading about it on Richard Barrow's website. Our accommodation is on the Khlong San side of Taksin bridge and we arranged a 'grab hire' where we had the use of car and driver within greater Bangkok for 4 hours at a cost of 1200 Baht. It took 45 mins to get there and 1hr 15 mins to get back so we had two hours at the fort. An hour of this was spent exploring the Mae Khlong ship - access all areas and it was fascinating, then there are the gun placements, Rama V statue, military hardware exhibition and Mangrove walkway compete with monkeys, which we skilfully avoided. On top of all this you can see out to the Gulf of Thailand and watch shipping entering the Chao Phraya river. There was a large seafront restaurant which was reasonably busy considering it was a weekday, we only had time to buy drinks and ice creams though. You may disagree, but this is my idea of a great day trip from Bangkok and the Grab option just gave us peace of mind that our transport was sorted so we didn't have to worry how we were going to get back to the city. Entrance to the fort with all its attractions is free. We took passports with us as entry is through a checkpoint but we were not asked for them, perhaps as we arrived with a Thai national who was driving the car. I did spot one other western visitor who was wearing some kind of pass so perhaps if you arrive by tuk tuk or taxi, you may need to provide ID. Overall, well worth a visit and thanks to Richard Barrow for the recommendation.

Visited on a Sunday morning whilst on a cycle tour. Very good value food, and lots of interesting stalls. Bought a varied selection including a granite pestle (broke my old one) pearl earrings, coconut pancakes, fried banana and sweet potato. Delightful small market with plenty of stalls, immaculately clean and great place to have a drink and relax whilst exploring this wonderful area.
