Ex convento San Agustin

Reviewed By mvsobrepena - Manila, Philippines

Simple on the outside but it's gold on the inside! I love this church. The baroque designs of the interior church walls from ceiling to floor must have been meticulously carved in wood and gold gilded. Would need a thorough polishing though. It seemed to have accumulated dusts over the centuries or has the shine of the gold faded a little? But it all adds up to the antiquity of the temple. So many statues of saints and angels and large paintings of catholic figures and events. The church pews are of a different design, wooden slats on the backing. It's a nice church for contemplation. As of Nov2014, the left church tower is undergoing maintenance work but church business continues as usual. Whenever I go to Salamanca downtown, I manage to come inside and say a little prayer. A nice area to start my weekly stroll in the downtown area. Very accessible to all vehicles. It has a discreet underground parking lot in the Plaza Civica right in front.

Plaza Civica

Reviewed By mvsobrepena - Manila, Philippines

A vast expanse of a park just right across the very nice church of Templo de San Agustin. Although it is right in the intersection of many calles/streets in the middle of downtown area, it is a quiet park with many comfortable benches (and lightings at night). A good area to relax. There are outdoor cafes right in the park side. Also pizza, tortilla, and fruit stores across the streets. Nice place for people watching - families on their afternoon stroll, peddlers offering their wares, shoppers, lovey-doveys, and more.
Salamanca town is very chilly for me during my October, November stay so bring something to warm you up. But it didn't stop me from trying Michoacan ice cream, a wide choice of creamy and nutty local ice cream from clean ice cream stores that are a plenty in the downtown area. You can have these ice creams in cones or cups or sticks. The storekeepers would even let you taaste the different flavors to help you make up your mind in choosing the varied flavors. Yes, you can have 4 flavors in one big cup for only 30mxn pesos. Enjoy it in Plaza Civica!
