Abbatiale de Saint Gilles

Reviewed By NigelW938 - Agde, France

Part of the front of the Abbey dates back to the very beginning of 10th century and is far from imposing but….when one crosses the threshold one enters one of the most extraordinary and beautiful churches that we have ever visited. Firstly the space is so vast that one wonders how the arches, which appear to be so frail, can hold the weight of the roof and although the stained glass windows are fairly small the light is amazing due no doubt to the almost white stone work (Pierre du Gard). The crypt is even more impressive than the church. It is immense and must be seen to be understood in it’s complexity. To attempt to describe this monument would require an expert and a great many pages. If you are within 200 kms of this marvel you should make every effort to visit if possible with a guide if not you should read up on the history since its' construction.
