In 1538, the first Dominican friars of the "Orden de Predicadores de Santo Domingo de Guzmán" arrived in the "Capitanía General de Guatemala", establishing the "Iglesia y Convento de Santo Domingo". It was one of the most important Roman Catholic convents of the Americas in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The baroque two-towered building with fantastic ten bells, filled with rich objects and holy relics, was destroyed by the earthquakes of 1773. Its ruins remained abandoned for many years. Centuries later, they were somehow restored and house, today, an awesome complex of museums. Through the ancient walls, brick archways, old crypts and tile corridors, the treasures of "Casa Santo Domingo" are on display: pre-Columbian Mayan art, ceramics, religious objects, silver and glass wares, old pharmacy articles ... plus paintings, sculptures, colonial furniture and archaelogical findings. Centro Cultural La Azotea is a museum complex set in a 150 yr old coffee mill and plantation just 5 mins out of the town of Antigua. The attractions include a didactive Coffee Museum with a fully operational 19th century coffee mill, a coffee plantation tour, an industrial coffee mill in full operation (Dec-Mar). It also includes a Museum of Mayan Music and Instruments, an exhibit of Mayan textiles and customs and a recreation of a Mayan village highlighting it's architecture and construction materials as well as the regions' botanicals.The cost of entry is $ 6.00 making it great value for moneyFree Shuttle Pick-Up in Central Park of Antigua

We went here since it was close to where we are staying, not expecting anything great based on other reviews. It was better than we expected. It has two distinct museums, one on coffee production and the other on Mayan culture, centered around music. Both museums are worthwhile to visit. There are guided tours, but you can also wander through at your own pace, as they have plenty of descriptions in both Spanish & English. We were able to tag along on an English tour through the music museum but did a self guided tour through the coffee museum as there was only a Spanish tour being offered while we were there. It was very quiet while we were there on a Wednesday morning & early afternoon. The grounds around the buildings are quite pleasant to walk through. Price for each museum is 35Q but they offer both for 60Q. The visit concludes with a small cup of coffee at the gift shop.

Museum of Antique Books exhibits a valuable collection of books and original documents published in Guatemala (1660 to 1821) during the colonial period, a sample of the printed production in what it was "El Reino de Guatemala" (The kingdom of Guatemala). The museum has four permanent exhibition halls and a series of temporary exhibitions each year with a diversity of themes.
