Pico Mountain

Pico Peak is family-friendly and price-conscious.

Reviewed By Kelsdog - Truckee, California

Pico Mountain is a real mountain with steep and challenging terrain that caters to the expert but also has a softer side for the family. No crowds, great restaurant and bar (Last Run) and has a true small ski area vibe that is so special that you need to try it yourself. Live music and events on almost every weekend.

Paramount Theater

Reviewed By Tony9876 - Huntsville, Texas

Those of you who still enjoy the classic rock of the 70s and 80s band Styx missed a great show if you did not catch Dennis DeYoung and the Music of Styx. The 'other Styx guys' tour as Styx, but Dennis' Styx show is much better and true to the original sound (he was lead vocalist on more of their hits, and August Zadra does a GREAT job with the Tommy Shaw songs). But, this is a review of the venue--what a great place the Paramount Theater is for a show like this--not a bad seat in the house. The only irritation -- just about every place in the world these days KNOWS that people carry smart phones and want to keep some memories of a great show. But this show, even though the artist does not care (I've seen him several times and there's never a problem with recording video), the "I'm in charge here" ladies of the Paramount spent the show running around stopping people from shooting video, completely distracting throughout the concert.

Very simple museum that has Norman Rockwell's art from various times (1920-1970s). I saw a lot of art that I recognized in various settings growing up. Depending how in depth you will look at all the art (mainly published paintings/sketches), the museum will take 30 or more minutes.

Park in front of the arena and head over to the trails at Pine Hill Park at the end of the parking lot. Once you're in the trail system there are no restrooms or water, so plan accordingly. We enjoyed three hours of hiking and went to the pond. You could spend an entire day here. There are enormous rocks, tiny orange lizards, and some nice views in the paths of the power lines. It's a nice place with intermediate trails.

Green Mountain National Forest

The Green Mountains offer among the best fall foliage viewing, pleasing both hikers and those on the many scenic drives.

Reviewed By Taylor B - Chicago, Illinois

If TripAdvisor can acknowledge the Shawnee National Forest in Herod, Illinois, on its system, it surely can make room for the Green Mountain National Forest in Rutland, Vermont. After all, TripAdvisor publishes reviews for Green Mountain National Golf Course, Green Mountain Sugar House (whatever that is) and Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center. So why not Green Mountain National Forest, which covers nearly 400,000 acres and is the biggest contiguous land mass in the state. Established in 1932, the forest supports a variety of wildlife, including beaver, moose, coyote, black bear and white tailed deer. It also supports a large variety of bird species, including wild Turkey and ruffed grouse. In addition, the forest contains three nationally designated trails--parts of the Appalachian Trail, Long Trail and Robert Frost National Recreation Trail--and also three alpine ski areas, seven Nordic ski areas and about 900 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and horseback riding. And that doesn't include the thousands of visitors who drive through the park annually, just to take in the green scenery. The park can be accessed from several towns, including Rutland and Bennington. The park headquarters are located at 231 North Main Street in Rutland.

Rutland Free Library

The Rutland Free Library's mission is to bring people, information and ideas together to enrich lives and build a vibrant, strong community.

Reviewed By Luv2Pub - Mendon, Vermont

Rutland Free Library has everything you'd expect: books, magazines, newspapers, audio and video media, computers and internet, and everything is free for loan. I love going to this library because it has many places to "settle." Also, while the staff is not overly warm, they are competent and helpful. If you have a Rutland library card, you can get books from other libraries in the state. Also, you can drop off your old books so it's a good place to donate. Parking is always available but it is on-street, so bring a few quarters.

There are good bones here that will make this an excellent few hours of activity for kids from ages 1 through 7 or 8. They are adding new activities currently and the ones they have are really pretty engaging for the kiddos. Keep an eye on this place as it should be really something in the months and years to come.

The Chaffee Art Center

Reviewed By pickytravellers2 - Killington, Vermont

Vermont has several wonderful arts centers and the Chaffee is one of them. With 2 locations in Rutland (a beautiful mansion on Main street (rt 7) and a smaller (newer) location in downtown Rutland), be sure to check them both out. The large exhibits change on a rotating schedule and there are always smaller exhibits in the down town location. They also offer a variety of classes and events. One of the most amazing things about this organization is that all of their exhibits are open to the public and free. They operate based on a small membership base and voluntary donations at the door. They don't promote this information, so it could be easy to miss. Be sure to leave a little something if you enjoyed your visit.
