Strand Theater

The Strand Theatre, located in downtown Rockland on the coast of Maine, has been entertaining audiences since 1923. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the theater underwent an extensive renovation in 2005, which included new sound and projection equipment, a fully restored interior and exterior, and a bright new marquee. In 2014, the theater became a non-profit organization and is now owned and operated by the Friends of the Strand Theatre. Today, the Strand Theatre is a multi-use venue offering the best of current first-run and independent films, live musical concerts and comedy, simulcasts, educational programs, conferences, and other special events on our stage and screen.

This almost 100-year-old theatre opened a few years after World War I ended! Today, it is refurbished, and shows films, as well as featuring singers and comedy acts—all at very reasonable prices.  The renovated bathrooms are welcome and the concessions are very good. And the people that work there are friendly, too.

We stopped in the Sail Power and Steam Museum while walking on the Rockland Harbor Trail, and we highly recommend it to anyone in the Rockland area. It is a must-see if you are interested in the local history and maritime history, with a large and unique collection of items. I recommend using the guided DVD tour so that you can hear Captain Jim Sharp's stories and information about each room.

This museum has a very large collection of three generations of the Wyeth family and should be a got to for anyone visiting or staying in Rockland. There are other artists represented from the 1800's on and it is a good place to learn a bit about the history of the area. Tickets prices are $15, with a discount to $13 for seniors. Well worth it. It is open usually from 10 t0 5.

Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA)

CMCA has been supporting, exhibiting, and sustaining arts and artists with ties to Maine since its founding in 1952. In that time, CMCA has grown from a scrappy upstart presenting shows in barns and backrooms to become the state’s preeminent contemporary arts organization, hosting a slew of internationally-known artists along the way. With its new space in the heart of downtown Rockland, designed by internationally renown architect Toshiko Mori, CMCA extends its reach exponentially, allowing it to continue its mission on a whole new level.

Reviewed By ptkeenan - Rockland, United States

A stunning setting for terrific exhibitions by artists with Maine roots or connections. It’s like a taste of NYC’s Whitney or the Boston ICA in Rockland. The modern, light-filled galleries designed by NYC-based architect Toshiko Mori (who has a place on North Haven), offer a bright counterpoint to the dark brick-and-wood interiors of older buildings nearby.
