What to do and see in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand: The Best City Tours

July 9, 2021 Yuk Petri

The holy city of Rishikesh, in the base of the Himalayas, holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for local Hindus. Sacred rivers and mountains set the scene for yoga and reflective hikes, and rafting here is an absolute must. The Beatles got in touch with their Eastern spiritual side here, writing several songs during a 1968 stint at a local ashram.

I took a night walking tour of Rishikesh with Djay. I'm a solo female tourist and always felt safe and treated with politeness by my guide. He even dropped me off at the hotel after the tour was over. He showed me the main religous sights in Rishikesh and openly discussed religious rituals with me. I highly recommend this tour. Djay is a great guide.

We went in Nov 2020, started to trek from Jankichatti. Though the kms displayed is 5kms, but in total its a trek of almost 19kms both sides. The view wile trekking is great but in a certain point you will the route, as you hvave to enter the forest and uphill trek. Its better to ask the local for routes, to avoid getting missed. The temple is good and has hot springs, food availability is not much. But, you can get biscuits and Maggie, chai. We could see snow on the mountains and river alongisde.

We travelled in February 2020 just before the whole world went into corona lockdown. Our trip announced as multi adventure tour has fully fulfilled all the promises made upfront and much more. We took airplanes, buses, bikes, boats and also made a lot of walks - even this was a nice adventure. Specially at the three days biking through Rajasthans landscape we saw people living on the farms, working on their fields, a school from inside, marriages and much more. In the cities we saw many cultural highlights, all the colors of the markets and people and even had a lot of of fun with the nice group of people we travelled with. Sarah and her team from Chalo made these weeks to a wonderful experience - not only the tourists view was shown but also a view of the real life in India with all the nice things but not ignoring the problems and issues they have to deal with. It was our 2nd trip to India, and this trip was much better than the 1st one organized by another company (and we saw the tigers!). We would always book another trip with Sarah to experience new India adventures.

This place was always in my travel checklist and I wanted to visit this jyotirlinga atleast once in my life time. Finally I got a call from Baba Kedarnath ji in the first week of October 2020. It was an extempore plan made by me and two of my friends. I selected this month for travel because as it is covid situation all over so I have predicted that the crowd will be less during this time and might get the best darshan of Baba Kedarnath ji and I was very fortunate enough to get it done. I would like to narrate my experience throughout. We made a booking through traveltriangle app well in advance as this destination requires a detailed planning. I booked a nonstop flight from Mumbai to Dehradun on 9th of October 2020. We followed all the necessary protocols required during the pandemic situation. After reaching the airport our driver came to pick us up and drove to guptkashi. It took approximately 8 hrs of time to reach Guptkashi because of the road repairment work going on the way. The journey was a bit tiring so I would recommend you to book an SUV car which will be more comfortable. After reaching gupkashi we checked-in to our cottages already booked by the travel agent which was one of the pleasant stay. There aren't five star/ four star accomodation available in the vicinity of kedarnath because the temple remains closed for 6 months due to harsh winters. The cottage name was Himalyan comforts which took care of our needs in pandemic situation. Rooms were well sanitized and hot water was available 24 hours along with a complimentary heater for each room . Food was above average. We had booked our helicopters both ways online for the next day well in advance. Helicopter departure is based on the weather conditions but we were fortunate enough to get the best weather and the view from helicopter ride was mesmerizing .It took 9 mins to reach Kedarnath hill top. Return journey of helicopter is totally based on first cum first service basis. Due to pandemic there wasn't much crowd in the temple and we were fortunate enough to get the darshan in 10 mins of time. There is also langar available for the people who want to eat prasad. We took a return helicopter ride post our darshan and by God's blessings we landed safely. It feels like heaven when you reach the vicinity of the temple. People planning to trek kindly make your reservation near the temple area as it is next to impossible to return on the same day as the trek is for approximately 20 kms and needs lot of time and energy to do it . As the trek comes under wild life area so trek post 2 pm is prohibited you have to start it before that. And while returning you need to reach Guptkashi atleast till 5 pm. People with medical ailments kindly avoid going there as the oxygen level is below normal might feel a bit heavy breathed. Kindly consult your doctor before comingvto kedarnath. The weather is extremely unpredictable so make sure that you carry sufficient winter clothes with gloves and extremely good quality of trekking shoes with a thicker sole. P.s - the pandits inside the temple might manipulate you to do some puja or anything else and might ask huge amount for it later after performing it so don't fall in their trap. We stayed their for two night and three days because we made a helicopter booking. People thinking of treking might need 1 more day extra to stay near kedarnath temple. Happy to help you guys! If you have any queries regarding kedarnath do email me on [email protected].
