What to do and see in Riga, Riga Region: The Best Day Trips from

January 11, 2022 Darleen Reid

The Latvian capital, the largest city in the Baltics, is a fascinating mixture of proud Latvian tradition and influences of the various countries that have occupied it. Independent once again since 1991, Riga's Art Nouveau center has won it UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. Opened up to mass tourism with the advent of budget air travel, Riga's Old City and its abundance of bars and restaurants can be explored on foot. The New Town is easily reached by an efficient and modern bus and tram network.

We booked back-to back guided tours taking in the Old city, followed by the art nouveau district. Our guide was very informative and flexible and her command of English was excellent. I'd say a guide is indispensible if you want to get to the heart of the city. It was a hot day so we stopped for a drink part way though and, in repose to our questions, our guide gave us an account of her family background. It was very enlightening to hear, at first hand, the impact of occupation by Germany and Russia and that no grudges were held.

Use a chance to visit one more country on your list while visiting Riga! We can stop on the border between Latvia and Lithuania so you can take a photo with signs (optional). At the Hill of Crosses, you will have a chance to purchase a cross (at very reasonable prices) from the local people, to leave on the hill or take with you as souvenirs. Please note that you can also bring a cross which you've made yourself if you'd prefer to do so! At the Hill, we will take you on a guided tour so you get to know some stories and legends that will help you appreciate this place better. After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore the place by yourselves without the guide. After the Hill of Crosses we'll be driving to town Siluva where you'll have a free time to visit the chapel which was built on top of the stone (it is still there in the centre of the chapel) where Blessed Virgin Mary appeared back in 1608! After free time in Siluva, we'll be heading back to Riga.

It was the best choice to come from Vilnius to Riga with visiting all great point between cities. We saw frightful Hill of Crosses and amazing Rundale Palace Museum. I guess we wouldn't have visited these countrysides places without support. The good bonus for us was interesting Riga trip where we visited main sightpoints and squares. It was really helpful because we stayed in Riga for next 2 days and could plan our routes without advice, based on previous information. Thank you Vadim for our fruitfull tour!

Latvian cuisine is exquisite and this is the perfect tour to discover it. We went around Rīga's central market with Liga, who introduced us to many flavours our palates had never tasted before: pickled veggies, hearty soups, delicious pastries. She made sure we were following all the sanitary requirements and we felt super safe with her. We couldn't recommend this tour enough. This is an experience for all senses since colours also invade you from all around. Great gourmet experience overall. Thanks Liga!
