What to do and see in Reno, Nevada (NV): The Best Nature & Parks

May 30, 2021 Major Galusha

Nevada's "other" gambling and resort town, Reno is located in the western part of the state near the California border. What the city lacks in glitz or reputation it more than makes up for in attractions and amenities. There are first-rate hotels, golf courses and casinos to rival its southern counterpart and, also like Las Vegas, Reno has become a popular destination for families. Galena Creek Park offers nature trails that even young children can navigate, plus organized educational events for families.

Hunter Creek Trail

Reviewed By 3ke3

This is a beautiful hike, light to moderate difficulty (on my scale anyway). Just shy of 6 miles round trip, some topography, generally uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back, but nothing too tough. 3 creek crossings (a metal grate bridge and 2 large logs) don’t pose a problem. Mostly sunny, but some shady areas closer to the waterfall at the top of the creek. Didn’t really see any critters along the way, which was kind of a surprise. Free public parking, restrooms (clean) and drinking fountain at the trailhead. Bring water and snacks with you. Dogs are welcome, but there are a few all-rock stretches that may be tough on tender paws. Enjoy!

Didn't expect this to amount to much but it was outstanding. An incredible collection of safari trophies, horse awards, African and other parts of the world collectibles and a series of dioramas with additional African animals. Short movie explaining who Wilber May was and detailing some of his background and exploits set the stage for the museum. Very well done. We didn't visit the attached Arboretum and Botanical Garden but those should add to the experience.

Animal Ark

This is a great place to visit - kids will love it as well as adults. It is also a great charitable organization that rescues and cares for wildlife. They provide a safe haven for injured, abandoned and otherwise non-releasable wildlife. They have visiting hours starting at 10am except in the winter. There is a picnic area and a gift shop which sells snacks, drinks, and ice cream, as well as a variety of souvenirs and novelty items. We enjoyed our visits there a lot. It was fun watching them feeding the bears. We tried to go early before the larger animals took their daily naps. It is a nice outing for the whole family, as well as a worthy cause for our donations.

This is a very easy hike and has lots of pretty views. Dog friendly and kid friendly. Watch out for soggy parts on the trail when snow is melting.
