What to do and see in Reno, Nevada (NV): The Best Free Things to do

September 13, 2021 Janean Rudisill

Nevada's "other" gambling and resort town, Reno is located in the western part of the state near the California border. What the city lacks in glitz or reputation it more than makes up for in attractions and amenities. There are first-rate hotels, golf courses and casinos to rival its southern counterpart and, also like Las Vegas, Reno has become a popular destination for families. Galena Creek Park offers nature trails that even young children can navigate, plus organized educational events for families.

Absolutely amazing! My husband and I eloped because we wanted something simple and for it to be just the two of us. They made it so easy and the ceremony was so beautiful!!! They have so much to offer and are very accommodating. I highly recommended this place and they take wonderful pictures!

Hunter Creek Trail

This is a beautiful hike, light to moderate difficulty (on my scale anyway). Just shy of 6 miles round trip, some topography, generally uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back, but nothing too tough. 3 creek crossings (a metal grate bridge and 2 large logs) don’t pose a problem. Mostly sunny, but some shady areas closer to the waterfall at the top of the creek. Didn’t really see any critters along the way, which was kind of a surprise. Free public parking, restrooms (clean) and drinking fountain at the trailhead. Bring water and snacks with you. Dogs are welcome, but there are a few all-rock stretches that may be tough on tender paws. Enjoy!

Truckee River Walk

River walkway that affords views of the river and Reno.

Reviewed By MariaDabaghchian

The riverwalk runs along the north side of the river with some meandering where foot and mixed bridges cross to the island home of Wingfield Park. It is especially attractive in autumn late in the afternoon when the fall foliage and sunsets flame the glassy stretches of the river. Brief plaques provide fun historical context. Some of the Riverwalk is simply a broad sidewalk bordered by the river on one side and restaurants and shops on the other, but other segments run through parks and, indeed one end is at Idlewild Park, where those enchanted by their ramble can continue near the river. It is a remarkable blend of urban amenities (shops & restaurants) and a wild-land feel with waterfowl and human frolicking in the water in the summer. . In how many urban rivers can you watch folks trout fishing for their breakfast? Parking is available nearby. Homeless people do hang out and sleep rough in some places here, but the context is peaceful and tolerant, with "Reno Ambassadors" being a positive calming and inclusive presence.

Their football games and stadium are awesome. We had so much fun!! The crowd was high energy and the stadium is small enough that there isn’t a bad seat.

Exploring Reno on a spring day, we headed to Bartley Ranch Park. There are great views from an overlook (take trail to left of restrooms) and easy walking trails on the flat around horse corrals, historic buildings, and extensive collections of antique farming equipment. Dog (on leash) friendly and of course horse friendly. Great way to spend an afternoon

Spouse & I have wanted to visit for the past year or two during our annual Reno visit, but always ran out of time. The arboretum is wonderful for strolling & is ADA accessible. We enjoyed the plants & view of distant hills. It's spread out over several areas w/pavilions, picnic tables, disc golf, maybe more. We didn't visit the museum.

Peppermill Casino

If you like luxury rooms, a great casino, large mega screens on every wall in the casino with streaming views from around the world, you will be impressed. We recommend asking for a room in the Tuscany Tower. Beautiful red marble floors with an old Mediterranean/Italian style decor. Rooms have a small refrigerator with a tv that gets the same streaming views shown in the casino (video channels start on 65). Cafe Milano is our favorite - it is smoke free environment and has good sized portions of food too.
