Real de Catorce (Spanish [reˈal de kaˈtoɾse] (help·info); meaning: Real [a unit of currency] of Fourteen), often shortened to Real, is a village in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí and the seat of the municipality of Catorce. It is located 160 miles (260 km) north of the city of San Luis Potosí, and currently has a full-time population of under 1,000 residents. This 'ghost-town' in the high and dry expanses of northern San Luis Potosí state was once a thriving silver mining settlement. Real de Catorce has long been a pilgrimage site for both local Catholics and Huichol shamanists, and is now being discovered by international tourists drawn by the desert ambience and reputed spiritual energy.

These old buildings were built to support the mining staff and were closed years ago. I found the buildings most interesting and marveled at their structure. I found water cisterns used to supply water, and various structures such as chapels, meeting halls, etc. This area affords about the only hiking opportunities in the immediate vicinity.

This tunnel which was constructed a hundred years ago without modern technology is most amazing. The tunnel is one way and limits traffic flow in each direction for a specified time. I believe the tunnel is the longest in Mexico, l.2 miles in length.

The whole town is very calm, and the main plaza is no exception. The food under the square is very tasty and inexpensive, and you must try their traditional coffee. In front of the plaza you can hire driving tours ("Wheelies") that take you through the Mountains for very little money ($120 pesos per person).
