What to do and see in Queenstown, South Island: The Best Museums

March 21, 2022 Alida England

Staggering beauty and heart-pumping thrills await in the resort town of Queenstown, which is also known for its Hobbits—much of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in the area. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Queenstown for the kayaking, bungee jumping, jetboating, white-water rafting, hiking and skiing. More mild-mannered adventurers can take a quiet cruise through nearby Milford Sound, part of the Fjordland National Park World Heritage area, or sample South Island pinot noir from one of the region's 75 wineries.

Tim Wilson Gallery

Reviewed By Sherpa440531 - Auckland, New Zealand

We have just had a very special experience at the galley remembering one of New Zealand’s supreme artists if not the best this country and the world has ever seen. Tim loved creating canvases that captured the light and transported this on to his canvases. The galley is at the home of the later Tim Wilson and his life partner Vaj. The gardens that Vaj created to create an outdoors canvas and the stunning ceramics, This was very special thank you all involved Jenni and tony Ebert This should not be missed.

Hetties Rock & Crystal Shop

Reviewed By milliesmum2016 - Christchurch, New Zealand

that there's a Hetties Rock Shop in CHristchurch, for all your rockhounding needs and crystal proclivities? It's in the leafy suburb of Beckenham on the corner of Malcolm Avenue and Norwood Rd, right opposite The Birdwood, which is a lovely local cafe and eatery reviewed under it's own heading on TA. So your kids could browse the rocks and stones while you get coffee. There is so much to look at; the shop is crammed with all sorts of facsinating things, including a piece of fossilised mammoth bone!!!!!!!!!! Who knew? And there are lots of things to buy for 2 and 3 dollars. So it's the perfect place for kids to spent pocket money and birthday contributions. Lots of crystals and stones all with explanatory cards. Hetties is actually a bit of a Christchurch institution, so whether you're local or have managed to break out of your own lockdown location and are visiting, check this out for a bit if inexpenz=sive entertainment.

This gallery had quality items, not the tourist junk that is available everywhere. They feature several excellent artists working in greenstone and wood, including some creative carving I saw no where else during three weeks in NZ. The owner is knowledgeable and fair in his pricing. Don't go here if you can't tell junk from quality work.

Romer Gallery

Reviewed By 840gabrielh - Bellaire, United States

This gallery, one of two around the world to exhibit the work of German photographer, Stephan Romer, offers an excellent selection of his masterpieces. Technically outstanding, Romer selects his targeted scenery with care and highlights the interplay of contrasts, shadows and the dramatic landscapes of New Zealand. These large photographs would look great anywhere, whether in the office or at home, and serve as a great reminder of the dramatic beauty of New Zealand. The gallery is modern, full of natural light and the works are tastefully displayed, without crowding or visual obstacles.
