We had booked a 3 day private tour (Arica, Putre, Vicunas NP, Salar de Surire, Lauca NP, Lak Chungara, Arica). Our guide Juan was really helpful, went out of his way to taylor the standard tour to our interests (ornitholgy, geology, photography, small hikes). Our driver was very experienced and careful.
We had a great time and can higly recommend Mayuru tours and Juan.
We especially liked the Salar de Surire, Chonchoro mumies, mountain village Socoroma, all the birds and animals, the many volcanoes.

We spent a wonderful day sightseeing Lake Chungaro and the twin snow capped volcanoes of Parinasata. The day ended with an enormously ordinary lunch, but we all know that situation. Even the dogs didn't want our leftovers...I bet they had a better menu to choose from than us!

Close to the border with Bolivia, the Lauca National Park is exceptionally beautiful. It has special floral and fauna: I have heard that over half of the flora species in Chile are in this one park.
It also is very high (4400 Meters above sea level) so that breathing is quite difficult. One has to walk very slowly to avoid stressing out! It is worth it!

Salar de Surire

Reviewed By Etosha - Lancaster, United Kingdom

A visit to Surire requres an expensive tour from Arica or your own vehicle. If you the latter, you can approach from one of three directions. The first, the longest, is from Colchane on the road from Iquique to the Bolivian border via the deserted village of Isluga. Ther second is from the north from Putre, via Guallatire. This may be the easiest. The third is from the Arica road south of Putre via Belen. This is rough ('ripio') but the most fun. The view over the Salar as you approach is stupendous.
The Salar contains large amounts of Borax which is removed by the company Quiborax. There are all thrtee kinds of Andean flamingoes, lots of vicunas and vizcachas (tame near the CONAF refugio. If lucky, you may see a condor or suris (rheas). Don't expect to be overwhelmed by tourists! You can stay in the Refugio although, in early 2014, it is closed for an upgrade. Contact CONAF before starting.

Suri Plaza

I made the drive out here with a tour and was jaw struck with how beautiful this place is!! I ended up climbing Suriplaza mountain and got some of the best views of anywhere on my two month trip. It does take a while to get here but the place is truly out of this world and is so off the tourist trail that there was no one else for the entire day we were there. It takes effort to get out there but the rewards are worth it ten fold.

I would not drive to Putre just to see this (or any other) church. The drive is nice, the city cute, and the restaurants serve llama. Nice for folks like me who will try anything, but the meat is tough and dry. I suggest something else.

I travelled with a small group in North Chile on Noovember 2015. We went from Iquique to Arica, passing throught the highlands, Putre and Azapa Valley. Everything was really great! Gabriel (the manager) provided for us car, driver, fuel, accomodation and all meals (included pic nic!!) , an also a good chilean Wine! Excellent driver, Louis, not only a driver but a very experienced guide and a friend. IN Putre we stayed in the nice smal hotel managed by Gabriel's wife, that welcomed us very nicely. I really would like to go back and travel with them!

Suriplaza (from Aymara language:the place where the Nandus live) is one of the must-see areas of the Arica y Parinacota Region. The terrific beauty and atmosphere makes you feel you are in another planet. Starting at 4,800 m.a.s.l. and up to 5,400, you walk or trek for hours from the Moon to Mars. The area is wild, stunning, unexplored by tourism. Summertime adds rare wild flowers to the beauty.
