Spending one hour on the island to experience the penguins was a once in a lifetime experience. You'll take a small speed boat, referred to add a zodiac, for a 15 minute journey from estancias harberton. Once off the zodiac, you'll enjoy an up close walking experience of the penguin natural habitat. Wear layers and a rain worthy shell just in case. The guide provided an informative overview of the penguins and various habitat explanations.

Ushuaia Bay

Sailing on her bay is a great way to see the city of Ushuaia.

We passed through Ushuaia Bay on our cruise. Ushuaia was one of our port stops. Ushuaia Bay is the wide sweeping harbor of the world’s southernmost city, Ushuaia. The bay has a scenic setting, with the forested slopes of the snowcapped Andes to the north and the icy waters of the Beagle Channel to the south. The waterfront of Ushuaia Bay is just a short walk from the steep streets of Ushuaia’s city center.

Faro Les Eclaireurs

Such a catchy phrase. Of course, if you are touring in the area, you must have a picture of it. So, on your voyage through the Beagle Channel by catamaran, the catamaran will stop at this lighthouse and pivot, so everyone on the deck can have photo access to it. You will also see cormorants, sea lions and penguins on other islands in the Beagle Channel. Now that you have the iconic picture, you might want to know something about the lighthouse This lighthouse at the end of the world and the beautiful island on which it lies inspired one of Jules Verne’s lesser known books, "Lighthouse at the End of the World", an adventure story about a tenacious lighthouse keeper and a sadistic band of pirates. The French author started writing the book in 1901 and it was published posthumously in 1905. The lighthouse is built on the Isla de los Estados island some 29 kilometers from the mainland of Argentina’s southern most province Tierra del Fuego. It is powered by solar power. The iconic picture, with the mountains in the background, will be lovely, especially on a sunny day. I was debating how many stars to give Faro Les Eclaireurs One sees it for only a few minutes in passing. But, there is only one lighthouse at the end of the world. If you are lucky enough to be close enough to take a picture of it, you will have done something most of your friends have not. I give it a five for the bragging rights :).

Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego

I stayed two nights at Los Cauquennes Hotel before a ten day cruise to Antarctica. Did an entire day at the national park with the extraordinary services of Canal fun and Nature which provided us with an all-morning guided trek of 4 to 6 miles in the beautiful forest, then a lunch in a domed tent that they maintain, followed by a two hour canoe ride (actually inflatable rafts where that are somewhat comparable to canoes). An amazing history, a fair amount of wild life, beautiful views of the various bays, and an interesting self-paddled ride in the afternoon on one of the lakes and then rivers. Everything in the park is well organized even if you don't use a guide or similar service.
