Cherry Springs State Park

Reviewed By oliveremily - Elkins Park, United States

We visited this Dark Sky park during the weekend before the new moon in July, and were treated to the rare and stunning view of a sky simply full of stars. The kids with us loved watching the stars pop out as the sky darkened, and they were able to see the Milky Way clearly. We stayed on the short term public viewing side of the park, and it was very, very busy. While we stayed near our car because of the kids, it would have been a much more peaceful experience to go up to the viewing area for a consistent experience of the dark sky without cars and trucks constantly coming and going.

Pennsylvania Lumber Museum

The Pennsylvania Lumber Museum, administered by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, tells the story of PA’s rich lumbering history and promotes the ongoing care, management, and recreational use of its forests. Museum exhibits, all-new after a $5.6 million renovation conducted in 2015, feature thousands of objects ranging from prehistoric stone tools to early chain saws. Interactive exhibits simulate chopping and sawing a tree, piloting a log raft and racing locomotives. The historic logging camp on the 160-acre museum property includes a 70-ton Shay locomotive and a 1910 Barnhart log loader. Our rustic log cabin build by the CCC showcases the program’s iconic craftsmanship. Other exhibits include a steam-powered sawmill, birch still, Brookville engine, and Sustainable Forestry Trail. The museum is open year-round; Wednesday through Sunday, 9 to 5. Please join us on the first full-weekend in July for our annual Bark Peelers' Festival- our biggest event of the year!

We really enjoyed the excellent exhibits, both inside and out. The interpretive signage is very well done so you can do a self guided tour. Allow at least an hour to see everything. Be sure to watch the introductory video.

Austin Dam Memorial Park

Reviewed By Bigamus - Boston, United States

The Austin Dam tragedy was an unexpected and sobering experience and well worth the time if you are in the area. The park provides you with enough background to understand what happened there that day in 1911, and it offers a nice open space to reflect on those events. The park is free although it relies on donations to maintain the area. I highly recommend this if you’re in the Pennsylvania Wilds.

Gary's Putter Golf & Jiffy Pup Restaurant

Reviewed By GardenGirl615 - Pittsburgh, United States

We discovered Gary's Putter Golf when we were looking for something to do on a "back to nature" couples getaway. I haven't done mini golf since I was a kid but this was so much nicer than I remember! Everything here was new and clean and in great condition. We had the whole place to ourselves and played mini golf, fed the fish and watched the baby ducks swimming in the lake. We has such a good time we went back the next day for more fun, plus ice cream on the other side of the babbling brook that runs alongside. There is also a really nice picnic pavilion that would be great for birthday parties. It's a very well maintained entertainment venue in a beautiful setting with really reasonable prices! I highly recommend!!
