Herculanense Museum

This is a fairly small museum but was actually more interesting that the ruins themselves. The artifacts we saw were extremely well preserved. At with all the other archeological sites we visited, it was better with a guide.

Orto Botanico di Portici

This amazing Borboun palace is off the radar for many tourists yet is an incredible building full of treasures. It's only open on Saturdays, Sundays and Thursday afternoons .I bought the combined ticket for the palace and the nearby rail museum at Pietrarsa for 9 euros- a bargain for a whole day of perfect enjoyment. Public transport proved easier than I imagined as there's a CV train which leaves Sant'Agnello and Sorrento to Portici Bellavista en route to Napoli.. It's about a twenty minute walk to the palace and you're following signs for the university. Anyone needing precise directions can message . LInda and Laura at reception were so welcoming . Most visitors seemed to be Italian and like me were immediately enthralled by the grand entrance which the photo above really captures perfectly. Restoration works are obviously ongoing but there is still so much to see. I was here for well over 2 hours. The Royal apartments are full of splendid artworks . The Sienna Yellow Room was my favourite as well as the Flora Statue in Hall 9- this beautifully restored sculpture used to be outside in the garden and now inside can be admired up close and personal so to speak. The Chinese room was breathtaking and the Herculanense Museum Room 6 had on display such wonderful copies of the artworks from the Vesuvian Sites in a beautifully designed and lit space. Just by coincidence , my trip to Ercolano was planned for the following day. The gardens are beautiful so make sure you do go outside and look up to see the fantastic sun dial. The Botanic garden is across the road and gives you the chance to see parts of the unrestored building so appreciating the amount of effort that has gone into restoration so far. Towards the end of my holiday , I visited Caserta Palace but I have to say the atmosphere here made it special for me and I'm glad I made the effort to visit.
