We absolutely loved Port en Bessin and consider it a Normandy must-see! Port en Bessin has a cute, authentic downtown with great little boutique shops, fresh bakeries, and plenty of delicious eateries to satisfy the many tourists. But the true appeal of Port-en-Bessin and what draws us back is the fact that it is definitely an authentic, bustling fishing village with a very active port. The salt of the sea fills the air, the colorful scallop boats are coming and going at all hours, loading and unloading, delivery trucks are picking up the day's catch to rush to market, boat crews are laughing and shouting whilst busy mending their nets. It's fascinating to watch and invigorating to be standing dockside while the port buzzes around you! We love Port-en-Bessin... But it might not be for you!

Espace Spa Hotel Mercure Omaha Beach

The young ladies who staffed the front desk were gracious and welcoming. Our room the first night did not fit our needs as 1 bed was in the loft— we are in our 70’s and was not at all convenient. We were accommodated the next night in a 2-bed on one-floor room. Breakfast was certainly better than the typical, free breakfast. Fresh squeezed orange juice was served each morning. Our room was clean. Only issue we had was no single sheet was between the duvet and the bottom sheet. We requested and they accommodated us. Out group enjoyed the cozy lobby with a bar each night after site seeing. This is a reasonably priced hotel that is perfect after a long day visiting historic sites. From the house keepers to receptionists I give an “A”.

Musee des Epaves Sous-Marines du Debarquement

This museum just south of Port-en-Bessin on the road to Bayeux contains some tanks lifted from the ocean floor off the Normandy beaches and, in particular, one story about discovering the tank commander still alive some fifty years later. Pull off the road into their car park and take half-an-hour at least to view some armoured vehicles thankfully sprayed with a rust-prevention coating.
