Mahalaxmi Temple

Reviewed By Desifoodbelly - Pune, India

Peaceful, positive and powerful-just three words for this place. Open from 8am to 6pm even during COVID which ensures social distancing. The temple is situated in the village of Bandora or Bandivade which houses many other famous temples. It is closeby to the famous Shantadurga temple in Kavlem (5 mins drive). Sanitizers were provided when you entered the main temple and masks were mandatory. The security was performing temperature checks and noting adresses and phone numbers of devotees. This is main temple in Bandora although there are various other temples by the same name in other parts of Goa. However, there was another temple of Mahalaxmi in the fifteenth century in the town of Colva in Salcette. As is the case with most Hindu deities in Goa, the idol of Mahalaxmi from this temple was also smuggled away in the middle of the night to avoid persecution during the Portuguese Inquisition era of the sixteenth century. The two devotees Safto and Fato took away the idol in a trunk and first took her to the town of Talauli near Ponda. Till today, the people of this village worship the sign of the feet of the goddess. The idol brought from Colva was then taken to Bandora and installed along with the existing idol. So today there are two idols of Mahalaxmi in the temple premises, along with other deities such as Shri Ravalnath, Shri Baleshwar, Shri Narayan Purush and interestingly also idols of the two devotees i.e. Safto and Fato who managed to save the Goddess from Colva. This is the kuldevi of mainly Saraswat Community and few other communities. Beautiful surroundings, temple and premises. Do visit at least once!

Mystic Woods by The Butterfly Conservatory Of Goa

A conservation project by an ordinary couple attracts a lot of visitors inspired by their efforts to transform a barren hillslope into a forest. The Butterfly is used only as a catalyst . Breeding butterflies need endemic plants , clean air and humus rich soil . Caterpillars attract lot of insect predators hence the cycle is complete. Visitors get to see the free flying butterflies only between September to December , but are more attracted to this place to interact with the promoters Jyoti and Yashodan and their unique one its only kind in India sloping rooftop garden house with rainwater tanks and the many tiny surprises that the conservatory has to offer.
