Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village

As a hub for tourism, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is home to the visitor information centre, Gift Shop, and a Western Canadian frontier village with 24 heritage cabins and two museum buildings filled with intriguing artifacts. The Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village was established in 1966, and was intended to preserve the area's vibrant pioneer heritage. Over the years, the efforts of countless volunteers and employees has seen the museum grow to include 26 buildings and 24,000+ artifacts. Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is an outdoor heritage facility. Visitors are able to walk directly into any of the historic buildings, and view the artifacts, which are displayed openly. The open concept and self guided museum means you also free to wander through six acres of beautiful Gardens, including a pond and waterfall (summer) and large community garden area. Each of the buildings in the Village is authentic, restored, and furnished with period furniture. Artifacts and everyday tools used by the owners and inhabitants of that time, are displayed in each building. The history is not roped off or preserved behind glass.

I've been to a couple of pioneer villages throughout Canada that looked like no one had dusted the exhibits since the Victorian Era when they were created. That's what makes this place such a pleasant surprise. The entire village is well ordered, kept superbly clean, and is blessed by some of the friendliest and most cooperative staff I've seen in any tourist attraction of this type. It's a great trip back in time to the beginnings of what we now know as Alberta, and is highly recommended as a great day out for the kids. Tear them away from their video games and expose them to some real and gritty Canadian history!

Castle Mountain Resort

Castle Mountain Resort is a hidden, not so little gem of a ski resort in Southern Alberta. Often called the best kept secret in the Rockies, the mountain was founded in 1966. 51 years later, Castle is lauded for its superior ski / snowboard terrain, laid-back community feel and, most of all, its sense of authenticity. Boasting almost 3,000 vertical feet of some of the longest continuous fall lines in North America, Castle is spread out over two Mountains, with 94 in-bounds trails and bowls, serviced by 7 lifts. The resort also boasts one of North America’s only resort based cat-ski operations; the Powder Stagecoach. From family cruisers, to the infamous steeps of the South Side Chutes, to wonderful tree skiing, Castle Mountain has terrain to satisfy every guest and every ability level. Castle is truly an authentic western ski experience. Nestled between the communities of Pincher Creek and the Crows Nest Pass, local ranch hands and seasoned powder hounds alike, share the slopes on the daily. Here the Wild West is alive and well. Plentiful snowfall makes more than just skiing and snowboarding possible. The resort offers guided snowshoe tours, complete with equipment rentals and featuring a scenic chairlift ride, every weekend. The Syncline Castle Trails Association maintains a 15 km network of beginner to intermediate cross-country ski trails at the Syncline-Castle Cross-Country Ski Area, just minutes from the mountain. Accommodations are also plentiful at Castle Mountain Resort, nearly all of which are truly ski to your door options. The Castle Mountain Lodge and Hostel features more than 50 beds in a hostel style format, in addition to a dozen hotel rooms. If you’re looking for something a bit roomier, or for a larger family or group, more than two dozen vacation homes and condos are available throughout the resort. In the summer Castle Mountain is the perfect venue for an intimate mountain getaway wedding. The T-Bar Pub and Grub is also open on weekends throughout the summer. If you stop by while you explore the beautiful West Castle Region, you won’t be disappointed.

We went to Castle Mountain after they received over 140 cm of snow in less than a week to get in some great powder skiing. We have been there before on several occasions and knew how super the snow conditions can be even when there has not been a recent snowfall or significant snowfall. They get a lot of snow sift from the other side of the mountain and it lands on the side where the skiing is so you can go there and it is like skiing in fresh powder even when it has not snowed. If powder is not your cup of tea there are many good groomed runs. The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is really nice. It is a great place for families and lift passes are much less expensive than other ski resorts in Alberta or Fernie B.C.

Beauvais Lake Provincial Park

Reviewed By DanSinLethbridge - Lethbridge, Canada

There are lots of good little hikes, decent fishing for southern Alberta, and good little kitchens and group areas for big groups or small. I've been there by myself and with groups as large as 15 and there was more than enough space to keep everyone happy.
If you do a little research and spend some time walking you can find some old cabins that are there from the original settlers in the area. There are plaques around too that give information about who built it and lived there. Great place to hike and learn about a bit of history!

Your hosts and guides, Richard Keil and Kate McKim-Keil, are third generation ranchers on the DU Ranch. We operate in one of south western Alberta’s most spectacular areas. We offer guided trail rides, western riding lessons and the Ranch Hand Getaway. Come and take a ride with us and allow us to share the local history and splendour with you!

I ran across Centre Peak's website while I was looking for things to do in the Crows Nest Pass area, since I was taking some visiting relatives out to Fernie for the weekend and we would be driving right through there. What a find! Kate took us out for a 1 hour ride and we had so much fun! The horses were ready to go when we arrived and Kate was really patient with us, since we hadn't ridden in quite some time. We got to learn a bit about each horses' personality and what to expect when we were riding and Kate was constantly checking that we were okay during the ride. I highly recommend Centre Peak to anyone else and I will be sure to revisit the next time I'm in the area!

Lebel Mansion

Reviewed By Celesa H - Pincher Creek, Canada

The Lebel Mansion is one of the few original historic properties still in place in Pincher Creek and it offers much in the way of local historic and cultural interest. The Mansion is owned by the Town but run by a local guild of artists and other creative types who care deeply about the facility. There is a small gift shop offering locally made crafts (ranging from soaps and jewelry to leather and fabric bags, scarves, quilts, Christmas ornaments, and more) and art (oil, acrylic, and watercolour painting, photography, sculpture), as well as some of the finest woodworking around. There is also a small art gallery that puts on shows of art by local artists, collectives, and others; the shows change every month or two, and there is often an opening reception with the artist(s) in attendance. Most of the rooms in the Mansion, which was once a private home, then a hospital run by nuns, are now rented out as private office space; however, you can stroll through the building (during open hours during the week and on weekends) and peruse historic photographs and artwork. Be sure to take in the view from the main floor and second floor balconies; you can see over the town in the valley, north to the Porcupine Hills, east over the prairie, and west to the Livingstone Range and the Crows Nest Pass. During the summer months, especially June and early July, be sure to stroll through the neighbouring rose garden, which is the culmination of many hours of volunteer effort by the Oldman Rose Society. Indeed, the garden is a great spot to bring a picnic lunch and sit on one of the garden benches on a fine day. The Mansion is a work in progress; volunteers continue to improve the grounds and restore the building, as funds allow. The Allied Arts Council (the group that runs the facility) also offers many classes throughout the year in ceramics, painting, and other creative pursuits.

September Springs Ranch Museum & Gardens

OPEN BY APPOINTMENT ONLY September Springs Ranch Museum & Gardens is the realization of it's owner's enthusiasm for antiques and collectibles and, somewhat obsessively, irises. Late spring and early summer, the tall blooming flower Gardens create a relaxing atmosphere in the comfort of the Rocky Mountains. We are a destination that requires time to enjoy the multitude of experiences including nature, our exquisite Iris and English Gardens, a playground, and three buildings filled with history. UNIQUE ART ANTIQUE and BOUTIQUE offer some rare and ancient displays from all over the world. UNIQUE ART GALLERY specializes in North American Native art and artifacts, and our early 1940's LOG SKI LODGE is authentically furnished to delight and educate. Unlike most museums that separate their artifacts from gift shops, we are unique in that our displays are interspersed with items for sale. Our Self Guided Tour highlights some of our most unique treasures. Visitors can also take the time to enjoy something tasty in our TEA ROOM featuring Devonshire Cream Tea, as they enjoy the view of the magnificent Rocky Mountains.

We visited looking to shop for antiques (giant letters on the side of the building proclaim ANTIQUES). The owner soon appeared and asked us to spend $8 per person admission to shop in the store. What?! She said it's a museum and so we would see "many unique things you won't see anywhere else"... I have news - museums don't sell their artifacts and I am not paying to shop.
