Tongass Kayak Adventures

Adventure travel company that leads guided whale and glacier tours with and without kayaking to remote locations within Tongass National Forest in Alaska's Inside Passage.

Reviewed By Mountainkid - Kalispell

We signed up for both a kayak adventure and a whale watch with Scott at Tongass. When weather didn't cooperate for our kayak trip, we made a unanimous decision to cancel the kayak part of the day and spend more time with the glacier and also explore small bays in the area. This meant that we were still at the Glacier when it calved a HUGE chunk of ice, many stories high, that sank, then resurfaced in slow motion, only to sink again...several times. It was an amazing sight. We also found a beautiful green bay with orcas swimming by in the mist, watched the seal pups getting ready to swim into adulthood, and just spent a beautiful day that couldn't have been more perfect.
Till the next day... which was, when we saw huge numbers of humpback whales gathered together bubble feeding and breaching. Scott had a mic to drop into the water that allowed us to hear the whale conversations, but we were also able to hear them directly thru the boat - and it was beautiful! Sometimes several groups were feeding at the same time all around us. Scott was the perfect guide with the coolest boat who somehow always managed to be in the right place at the right time! Those two trips were the highlight of our entire two weeks in Alaska!

Captain Scott took our party of four on an unforgettable trip to the Le Conte glacier. He was patient in answering our questions, pointing out sea lions and scouting for whales.

He got us a close but safe distance to the glacier allowing us a glorious view. He shared some videos of the constantly moving glacier to give us a better understanding of the changing view.

Scott was great at slowing down around the ice fragments allowing for great phot opportunities. Spectacular.

On the way back to the Petersburg harbor we came across three Orcas chasing a worn out sea lion. Even though we were out the end of our tour, Scott took extra time to stop, explain the hunting process and allow us plenty of photo time.

A true highlight of our trip to Alaska!

We went out on two whole day tours to whale watch with Whale Song Cruises and had an outstanding time. The trip was perfect in each and every way. Capt. Ron was very knowledgeable about whales. We did not know which direction to look one day as there were whales all around us. We took some awesome breaching photos. We highly recommend this company to do whale watching tours. We had an amazing two days whale watching. Bring your sandwich and chips for lunch.

Great boat ride and informative narrator. We saw plenty of sea otters and glaciers were breathtaking. We even saw a whale and boat turned so all could view it. Lunch was good, too. We had a beautiful, sunny day and colors of glaciers were still...MoreYes, being prepared for any weather (bring your sunglasses!) allows you to be comfortable while viewing. It could be Tracy Arm with the twin Sawyer Glaciers, Glacier Bay or LeConte Glacier near Petersburg, any glacier excursion is worthwhile. Thanks for sharing.

My wife and I visited the museum during our trip to Petersburg in July 2015. The museum itself is rather small, and its collection is not large, but it is very informative of the local history and development of the town.

The best part of the museum was the approximately half-hour long film detailing the history of the town and development of the local industry. We saw the town through a totally different lens after watching this.

Definitely worth an hour or so of your time during any visit to Petersburg.

May 2003 trip,

Its a 2-3 day hike depending on your fitness, and also how much you carry in l stayed 3 nights and went up further. You have to limit yourself to what you need and have great boots to go up.

This is bear country so, you do need to have bear canister with you.

The views and the scenery are well worth it though, you do have to organize a boat trip across and then also getting back.

Alaska Sea Adventures

Reviewed By Hidden-Gems - Lostwithiel, United Kingdom

We visited Sitka, Alaska for the first time in March, 2017 to see whales and the stunning scenery. We spent 9 amazing days on a beautiful 84 foot yacht called 'The Northern Song' cruising all around part of the Inside Passage around Sitka. During that time we saw so many whales in the Sitka Sound, estimated number about 80 plus. Constant bubble netting of the humpback whales while we waited for the herring spawn. We witnessed the start of the Sitka Herring Fishery, setting nets and testing the size of the catch. At times, the water around us was sizzling with herring and consequently the whales were extremely active, breaching, lunging and bubble netting. A photographers dream. In the fact the whole cruise was a wonderful experience which we will never forget. The Northern Song yacht is a really beautiful boat and so well furnished inside and very comfortable to sleep on. It is 84 feet long and carries up to 8 passengers plus 3 very helpful crew. The food served on board was delicious and varied. We had a wonderful time on this trip, met some great people and would not hesitate to recommend this experience. If you want to see whales as we did, this is the time and the way to do it.
