Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

The temple is beautifully decorated. The floral offering tables are full to bursting with blooms. Take time to notice the roof and wall paintings. You are allowed to take photographs inside the temple. The air is filled with incense and the scent of the flowers.

The lady who showed us the process of the batik was really friendly and patient, allowing us to take photos and ask questions throughout. We then looked around the shop which had a great selection of all kind of designs over three floors. There is always a little pressure to make a purchase in a shop following a tour however the lady who helped us was not intrusive or pushy and let us browse at our leisure without the usual following around or harassment. For this reason I was far happier to make a purchase, but given how lovely the artwork was I think it would have been hard to miss the opportunity to buy a souvenir either way

We stayed at Inora homestay in February 2012, when Ranil has begun to implement his world experience of the hotel industry into his business. Me and my wife stayed in Ranil & Inoka's house on the outskirts of Kandy for 1 week. Kandy was for us the basis for all day trips into the surrounding area. And it was a great choice! Ranil & Inoka were very helpful, friendly and made us feel welcome. We still keep contact with them and for the next trip to Sri Lanka we will definitely return to their services.

Hindagala Temple

Reviewed By Angshu - Mumbai, India

Hindagala Viharaya or temple is quite spectacularly located just underneath a large boulder close to the University Campus at Peradeniya. The temple seems to be located in a cave underneath the boulder and thereafter a tiled roof was built over it. It is believed that this temple is from the 6th century as ‘understood’ from the almost fully weathered away rock inscriptions just outside the temple.
The paintings along the wall are beautiful, and it is understood that they are from the 12th – 13th century. Some of the paintings have British era add-on touches as well. But they are really in bad shape…so faded that some are barely decipherable. The temple is badly in need of attention and repair. There are rarely any tourists around; the tiled roof is broken is some place & the paintings on the wall & ceiling get wet & damaged beyond repair.
The monk and an assistant opened the temple door for us…it is very nice inside with a large reclining Buddha and beautiful 'Jataka Tales' paintings on the wall and ceiling, most of which were re-done. Maybe only art lovers should venture into this temple which is not advertised as a tourist must-see

This is very close to the Temple of The Tooth and a very peaceful spot. A very friendly young man who maintained the cemetery gave us an excellent and informative introduction to the place. Many British garrison members and their families buried here, many of whom died from malaria or cholera in the early days of the garrison, as well as one who was hit by a cricket ball! Well worth a visit.

Well, my experience is a bit different. My plan was to visit Sri Laka next April, planned last Jan 2014. I contacted several Travel Agencies in Sri Lanka and I got A good response from Haniffas Holidays & Tours. But for some reasons all the plan was modified and I went Feb. 2014 for a nice eight days holiday in Lanka. Hassan answered me a bit late therefore I had to arrange and book with other agency. But truely while arranging my itinerary I called Hassan and found a nice response and deep information about his beautiful land.
So, it's difficult to judge about the service but I can say that it's a respected and responsable Travel office.
