Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari

Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari departs daily from the Christmas Cove Marina in Penneshaw 'Kangaroo Island's gateway'. Christmas Cove is one of Australia's Geological Monuments cut out by glacial movement 240 million years ago and it offers the perfect access to board the 7.5 metre vessel a Gemini Waverider that carries up to 12 passengers. In 1802 Matthew Flinders discovered Kangaroo Island on his world expedition. See the landing places where he and his crew arrived and where French explorer Nicolas Baudin came ashore and inscribed his details into Frenchman's rock in Hog bay. Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari takes you on a awesome 75 minute coastal and wildlife tour around the coastline of Kangaroo Island visiting places like Dolphin Cove, Cuttlefish Bay, Kangaroo Head and Snapper Point. Encounter pods of Bottle Nose and Common Dolphins that can been seen up close and enjoy them in their natural environment swimming up along side the boat, with numbers sometimes in the dozens and often with their baby calves. Colonies of New Zealand Fur Seals and Australian Sea Lions inhabit the coast that surrounds Kangaroo Island and these seals gather along the rocks enjoying the warm sun, resting after fishing for days on end and show off their agile swimming ability right before your eyes. Witness Southern Right Whales (seasonal) as they pass through these waters on their annual migration to the Great Australian Bight, look in awe at these giant majestic creatures often with their new calves who have swam so far from the Great Southern Ocean to give birth in these warmer safer waters of Kangaroo Island. There are many varieties of sea birds on the Safari including the unforgettable encounters with the mighty Osprey or sometimes known as the Sea Hawk. Opportunities arise on this wildlife Safari to marvel at the Osprey diving into the ocean to grasp fish with their powerful talons. Cormorants and Gulls are abundant along the coast. Put Kangaroo Island Ocean Safari on your 'must do' list - this is a Safari not to be missed on your visit to Kangaroo Island.

This is a great trip for the young and fit. My daughter swam with seals, and would have swum with dolphins, but the pod we saw were not interested in playing. Brad and Harley were professional and charming. However,if I had realised that the boat was a high-speed RIB, I would not have gone. I have artificial knees and osteo-arthritis. The boat bounced up and down, uncontrollably and at high speed, causing me severe discomfort and considerable stiffness afterwards.
A great couple of hours, but not for everyone.

The view is amazing (as are the number of people taking photos of it!). It can be a bit cool on the balcony if it's windy so take a jacket. The food was fine, but if your'e a vegetarian your only options are a cheese plate or a dip plate (but this is not uncommon on KI - you can't assume there will be a vego option at places). The Mexican chicken pizza was yummy. The wines were...well...there's a reason KI is not known as an amazing wine region. I don't know if it's that it's not a great spot for growing grapes or if the winemakers just don't have the same experience in other parts of the state but we went to two wineries and both had only 1-2 wines that were worth drinking and the rest were very, very, very average. As I said...you go here for the view.

A pre arranged after dark Penguin spotting trip which unfortunately for us was not successful. A cold evening and no penguins but the lady who took us out was very friendly enthusiastic, knowledgeable and did her best, we were just unlucky. If we were ever back on Kangaroo Island I would definitely give it another go.

My husband is a historian and he absolutely loved this place. It's only small but the genuine artefacts make it a worthwhile visit. There's a little bit of everything. Very few tacky replicas that you see in most museums. Worth a visit.

Lashmar Conservation Park

If you are looking for a quite, secluded and picturesque place to camp then we would recommend this place. It is half way between Penneshaw and Cape Willoughby and along the Chapman River. There are two camping areas right next to the river that are very nicely set out and you can fish as well.
Close by is a sheltered area that has a BBQ and water. We liked the fist camping area - camp site 1.
Worth checking out if camping on KI.

Penneshaw Market Day

Reviewed By Blight01 - Perth Western Australia

On the day we arrived we found the markets walking to our accommodation which was on 150 mtrs from getting off ferry. The markets operate when cruise ships arrive and we had the Pacific Jewel Mored offshore the day we arrived. This was a great influx of people to the island and the small market was a buzz. There was lots of local produce for sale from handmade jewellery , leather goods, honey, cards, hand creams, wood work products. One would come away with something when visiting this market. I am not sure how often it operates but it was a great find on the oval walking to our accommodation on our first day in Penshaw. Very much worth a visit when on Kangaroo Island.

Booked a trip with these guys directly 6 weeks ago. Im in KI on holiday from Sydney and I rang the day before to confirm the trip. They had cancelled the trip and not told me. They have technical issues but couldn't contact me even though I had used Facebook and mobile to communicate with them. Now stuck with no fishing charter as everyone is booked out.
