Bitola, or also known as Monastir during the Ottoman Empire, was and still is an important town: It was established by Philip II, father of Alexander The Great; It is on the Ancient Roman Road of Via Egnatia; and it was the town where the international community decided to open consulates to the Ottoman Empire. Today, Bitola is a town with a wealth of cultures intertwined in its streets and residents. Likewise, the remnants of a once thriving Jewish community are scattered throughout the town, and blended in the everyday life as a memory. In this tour we visit the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Balkans, we walk through the old Jewish neighbourhood to see where the Jewish once people lived, visit the Old Bazaar to see where the Jewish people once worked, and we see the many monuments that the local people of Bitola enacted in memory of their fellow citizens. In the process we learn also about the rich history of Bitola and its tasty cuisine.

Inclusions: Radio communication that enables you to listen to the guide's stories clearly, and to be able to keep a safe physical distance (in accordance to WHO recommendations).

Exclusions: The Shirok Sokak (Wide Street) of Bitola is a popular place to go for a coffee, we may do it to experience the local culture., A sweet-shop in Bitola is making a Jewish cake, in honour of the loss of its fellow citizens. And it is a good cake too.

Albania Express Travel

The Via Egnatia was a road constructed by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. It crossed Illyricum, Macedonia and Thrace, running through territory that is now part of modern Albania, North Macedonia Greece and European Turkey as a continuation of Via Appia. Starting at Dyrrachium (now Durres) on the Adriatic Sea, the road followed a difficult route along the river Genusus (Shkumbin), over the Candaviae mountains and thence to the highlands around Lake Ohrid. It then turned south, following several high mountain passes to reach the northern coastline of the Aegean Sea at Thessalonica. From there it ran through Thrace to the city of Byzantium (later Constantinople, now Istanbul). It covered a total distance of about 1,120 km (696 miles/746 Roman miles). Like other major Roman roads, it was about six meters (19.6 ft) wide, paved with large polygonal stone slabs or covered with a hard layer of sand.

I can't thank our tour guide Adam enough for giving us a fun filled day from start to finish. If you are lucky enough to get him as your tour guide you will agree with me that he is one interesting man on this planet! He went above and beyond, even making additional pit stops. He showed us so much in one day that would of easily taken us two to three days to do. The tour exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to do future day trips in other countries/cities with Albanian Express Travel and Adam!

If you are coming to Sofia, make sure you book this tour early in your visit! Elana is a fabulous. tour guide! She started with a short overview of Sofia (over a cup of coffee) and then we started our tour. We visited many beautiful, important and interesting sites. All along the way, Elana told us stories and answered our questions about the City, the people and the history. Elana went above and beyond to make us feel welcome to Sofia, to help us understand the history and culture and gave us suggestions for places to eat, visit and have coffee. We really appreciate that Elana offered to help us when we had questions about getting around after the tour. Thank you, Elana! You helped make our visit to Sofia a wonderful experience.
