Senkoji Park is one of the best & most popular attractions in the area.
Various temples, Lovers' Sanctuary, observation (viewing) deck and Museum of Art are just some of things that you can find there.
Whether you take the ropeway or walk up the hill yourself, you'll enjoy it.
Choose a nice, sunny day to appreciate some spectacular views of the old harbour area & Seto Inland Sea from the top.
In the summer they sell some snacks, ice cream and drinks as well, which is awesome.
People come over to relax, walk around or simply pray / meditate in many shrines and temples scattered around.
I remember we also met quite a few cats down there chilling out in the shadows...
Apparently, they seem to wander around all over the place and Onomichi residents are rather proud of this fact, accommodating them in many ways.
Don't forget your camera, bring your friends along and make the best of the daylight hours while you're there :)

Hirayama Ikuo was born in Setoda-chō, Hiroshima Prefecture in 1930 (in the fifth year of the Showa Era) where he spent his childhood in the region richly endowed with nature. Mystical tide and ultramarine oceans of the island had strong influence over his mind. We could say his sensibility was gained by the environment. Hirayama Ikuo survived atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Though he suffered the aftereffects of radiation, he produced a series of paintings depicting the introduction of Buddhism to Japan to longing for peace. In search of roots of Japanese culture influenced by Buddhism, his inspiration spread across time and space toward Silk Road where eastern and western cultures was interacted. His travel and researches in tracing Buddhist monk Xuanzang whose footstep expanded eastward stretched over 350,000km. Campaigning for the preservation and restoration of the world's cultural heritage, he earnestly worked on so called the "Red Cross Spirit for Cultural Heritage" whiles his busy schedule. Prayer for peace might serve as the driving force for all those works. A variety of Hirayama Ikuo's work are displayed at as part of the museum's collection including his childhood paintings, sketches, rough copies, late year works. Hirayama Ikuo said "I was greatly influenced by the culture of Seto Inland Sea". We hope you find those sprits in our museum. Mr.Ikuo Hirayma was born in this island and was a very famous real touch paintings. Here you can see his masterpieces of Silk Road series and Shimanami Kaido(this area) series. I was impressed how nice he painted when he was only 10-11. I could feel very relaxing moment while seeing his beautiful paintings. One of the must see locally.

Nothing of special interest here except that its old like centuries to parts over a thousands. The pagoda has cemetery around it soo if that's not your thing you can skip it.

This is a great temple and pagoda to visit. It is situated on the temple walk above the city. It provides spectacular reviews of the city below when standing at the pagoda elevation. We experienced this site during the peak of the cherry blossom which was a bonus to the visit. Be prepared to have a challenging walk to reach the pagoda. But in the end it is all very worth the effort. There are stops along the way at various levels to experience the temple. Allow at least 2 hours for this adventure.

Got driven there by a local and dropped off at one side. Got permission to walk over the bridge from one of the toll attendants. Walked across and took in the views. Not for the faint hearted or one who suffers vertigo. This type of activity would definitely not be allowed in Australia.

I rent an electric assisted bicycle at Setoda sightseeing guide office close to Ikuo Hiranuma Museum (US$6-7 for 4 hours. regular bicycle half the price) and crossed this bridge and back to Ikuchi island and took the other side of the island to go to Tatara Big Bridge to go to Ohmishima island (from this island to Imabari, the Islands belong to Ehime Pref. Ikuchi to Onomichi, Islands belong to Hiroshima pref.) and visited Sanctuary of Cyclist monument and came back. About 4 hours including rest and picture taking time. You can cross Bridges on a separate way only for walkers and cyclers so do not worry about cars and all the direction instructions in the Islands and Bridges were perfect. Bridge crossing fee is now free(used to be paid)

A cute little walk through some lovely narrow alleys up and down the hillside - a pleasant way to spend an hour or so.
Good
1) Cute - photogenic - some lovely views and nice buildings
2) Easy to follow - the path looks after itself and because it is on a slope you can see roughly where you are
3) Nice cafes and shops to browse in
4) Soothing green all around
5) A nice way to walk DOWN from the top - go up on the cable car and wander down the hill

ここのキャッチコピーは「海が見える寺」「鉄道が山門前を通過する寺」です。重文と国宝の宝庫みたいな名刹で、個人的には国宝「多宝塔」が一番のお気に入りです。又、境内の奥に並ぶ「千体佛」は壮観！地元の民衆が稚拙な明治政府の悪法、廃仏毀釈や神仏分離の令から守った寺院です。尾道は昔から「坂の町」と云われていて、平坦な場所は探さないと無いような地形です、その山肌に貼り付くように造営されたこの寺院は瀬戸内における聖徳太子信仰を今に伝える名刹でした。

The temple area is rather large and the ticket covers multiple areas within the temple area. Apart from the colourful and intricately decorated temple, there was also an area within the temple grounds called 'Heights of Eternal Hope for the Future' which displays a collection of abstract marble sculptures which I found rather interesting especially against the backdrop of the temple.
