What to do and see in Obergurgl, Austrian Alps: The Best Outdoor Activities

August 26, 2021 Phylicia Berquist

Heaven isn’t too far away from Obergurgl. Maybe because, at 6000 feet elevation, it’s the highest church parish in Austria. Or maybe it’s just the skiing. Take a guided tour with an expert mountaineer, explore the wintery dreamscape off-piste or get exclusive “early bird” slope access that ends with oysters and champagne. Or ditch the skis and go for a winter hike or thrilling toboggan ride. Ski huts and rest stops range from rustic to futuristic, all with panoramic views.

This is a must-do on a motorcycle, especially when there's still snow around. Great road and at the top you're treated with an outstanding motorcycle museum.

We booked last minute for a day of ski lessons following a difficult few days of skiing. Mario met us on the first morning and was very friendly and helpful, selecting the correct level of group for us. Our instructor was Rudi, I can’t praise him highly enough. His English was fantastic and his style of teaching was encouraging and constructive. We felt safe at all times and the lessons were challenging enough to stretch us within our comfort zone. He was so good, we booked for a second day. Our skiing came on in leaps and bounds and we have ended the holiday feeling accomplished and much more confident. Thanks to Rudi, we will be skiing again - he saved our holiday!

Fantastic ski resort. On high altitude you will always get great snow - for sure. This was our third trip here and all have been great success. Also particularly great is the Nederhutte apres ski four days a week. Pay a visit.

We are in our late 50s and needed an instructor who would help us gain confidence on the slopes. Siggy certainly did that and made our holiday a memorable one! He was so patient and gave us lots of encouragement and fun. Would recommend and if we returned to Oburgurgl would love to have him again. Cheers Siggy K&M.
