Near downtown Oakley, Kansas, the Fick Museum occupies the left side of the same new building that has the public library in the right side. The new building provides comfortable space for both the museum and the library. The fossil collection was started by Ernest Fick and his wife, Vi Fick. They collected most of their fossils near Monument Rocks in Gove County, Kansas. Monument Rocks is about 20 miles South of the Fick Museum in Oakley. Kansas was an inland sea when most of these fossils were deposited. Besides the fossil and mineral specimens, there is a collection of local history materials.

Monument Rocks

Reviewed By SusieMA1 - Belleville, United States

This was really off the beaten path-dirt roads, in a pasture with cattle all around, and of course windy. You can see these from the distance but have no idea what to expect until you are among the monument rocks rising like skyscrapers into the prairie sky. They are located on private property with signs all around asking that you don't litter or deface the pillars or climb on them. It sure didn't feel like we were in Kansas anymore! So glad we took the time to travel the dusty roads to get to see these wonders on the prairie-who would have thought this was the bottom of the Western Interior Seaway millions of years ago. Simply amazing! Go see these beauties on a dry day.

This huge sculpture, atop a (accessible) hill overlooking the surrounding plains is worth the jot off I-70. And, the two sculptors are from a nearby town. We were there on a Sunday so, unfortunately, the visitors center was closed. As much as the history of buffalo hunting is a sad one, this sculpture is amazing, just from the art standpoint.

Smoky Valley Ranch

Reviewed By RayS797 - Wichita, United States

We visited the Little Jerusalem area on a tour of western Kansas geology. For the most part the entire Smoky Valley Ranch/Little Jerusalem area is not open to the public since the Nature Conservancy only recently acquired the property (17,000 acres) and has not completed the necessary improvements (?) to allow public access. We were met by a representative of the Conservancy and she led a hike through the Little Jerusalem area for those hardy enough to tackle it. The area is very rough and SHOULD NOT be attempted by those with mobility issues. There are poisonous snakes in the area. My 7 year-old granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed this location but she stayed close to the tour leader and FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS.
