A great venue to catch live music! The venue is set up so that every seat is a good seat. I loved the acoustics. Sometimes you attend a live music event and the acoustics is not good. I could hear every note that Con Funk Shun put out from the stage. The menu says one drink minimum. I like that we ordered our drinks and seldom were bothered by the waiters/waitresses during the show. If you are going to attend a show, consider making reservations for dinner, because you will have priority seating. I look forward to attending again!

Built circa 1883. The floor is curved due to the 1905 Earthquake. The jolt knocked over the building support pilings and instead of repairing the foundation in the aftermath, they chose to leave it. Carpenters added to the baseboard on the deflection wall. Not one to question the veracity of what appears to be a literary story, but — just wondering why they did the latter and not the former. Unwittingly, their decision probably added to the mystique and saved the bar from demolition. This literal “hole in the wall” does exemplify and maintain historically a vestige of the ferocity of the 1905 Quake and the allure of Jack London. One can almost imagine this young school boy, soon to be famous writer, studying in the NE corner of this ‘bar’ — and not sure why a schoolboy is studying in a bar— I guess things were different in 1884 — but one can imagine a time shortly before and forever after when the Earth bent San Francisco and its East Bay sister city Oakland. In fact, one doesn’t have to imagine the outcome of a bendy earthquake — just examine the bent floor in this vintage 1890s bar while sipping on a local stout. Because it’s not just the bend in the floor hidden by a ‘new’ baseboard ‘cut to curve’ for the bent floor. No, it’s much more. This establishment represents so much more. 1890s America. 1905 San Francisco Bay Area frozen in time. And, “To Build A Fire”! Jack London. Literary Giant. This may not have become an Historic Landmark if it was not also associated with a Literary Giant. That is the genius and the salvation. America doesn’t always save or savior its legacies. This place does. And what’s more?!? Today!!! You can examine this history while drinking a $5 Draft Beer while sitting at the same northeast corner of this establishment that once entertained a young Jack London. Cheers! The history wall of photos and mementos is a bonus!
