Wooden Churches of Maramures

Reviewed By doinab634

More or less alike at a first glance - elegant shape, sky-piercing spires,,richly decorated interiors, polychrome murals evoking the most memorable episodes of Christianity, any of the 5 UNESCO-listed wooden churches I visited exudes a unique feeling of simplicity, sobriety and devotion.Apart from elaborately carved wooden doors laden with such typical symbol-motifs as the twisted rope, the tree life, the wolf's tooth or rosettes (notice them on the monumental gates of a peasant's home), each of them is peculiarized by fabulous details. For instance, St Nicholas' Church in Budesti - the chainmail armor and helmet of Pintea the Brave (Pintea, legendary figure of the local historiography and folk literature, was the Robin Hood of Maramures, preceding the latter by nearly 100 years);or the Virgin Mary's Nativity Church in Ieud on the Hill.Built in mid-14th century by a local craftsman, this wooden church is the oldest in Romania and it jumped into public attention a century ago when the oldest writing in the Romanian language notwithstanding its Cyrillic characters(dating back to 1391-1392) was found out in its garret.Known as The Pandect from Ieud, it can be seen in the Library of the Romanian Academy and the Introduction adorns the entrance to the new church erected in the lowland area of the village.

Fortress of Ponor

Reviewed By MeA18 - Paris, France

We went up on a very rainy day, and there was no problem, just make sure you're adequately equipped, because the track is not so easy, although doable by everybody. It was the most wonderful landscape we had ever seen. We also went inside the cave with headlamps, which was unforgettable (we recommend to do it with experienced people and water boots). As the site has been kept as it is, in its most natural way, you won't find any restaurant/bar in the national park, so make sure you bring your own food and drinks.

Apuseni Natural Park

Reviewed By Obeckett647 - Belfast, United Kingdom

The Apuseni Mountains are Romanian countryside at its best; flower-rich meadows, ancient forests and traditional wooden buildings. For the hiker they are ideal, as your walk can be as leisurely or intense as you like, with a great variation in the scenery and the landscape. too. The steep forested hillsides hide traditional villages and pristine streams and for the nature lover, the forests and meadows are full of flowers, butterflies, birds, mammals, amphibians and other wildlife. The mountains are best reached from Cluj-napoca, where you can travel by car or train to Huedin before heading south into the hills. The roads can be narrow and bumpy at times and shops and amenities are few and far between. Most villages usually have at least one small shop or car/cafe. I found walking here to be incredibly peaceful and would recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors.

Wonderful massage performed by two beautiful ladies for a couple in a beautiful room with wonderful ambience and soothing music. I can recommend this highly. Voyage Chianti is a purifying ritual in two phases: one for the back with matcha green tea and other for face with viniferina and organic grape oil, completed by a general energizing massage. At the beginning the participants are offered chocolates filled with wine liqueur. After cleaning the back with gel, the therapists apply a scrub that contains extract oil from matcha green tea and coconut, ensuring a gentle exfoliation with vegetable particles and sugar. The scrub melts on the skin and provides an ideal hydration level and smooth skin thanks to plant oils. Green tea deeply detoxifies because it contains tannin, a substance known for having lipolytic effects and eliminating toxins from the tissues. Other active ingredients are vitamins C and E, flavonoids, with intense antioxidant properties. They are found in young leaves of green tea matcha, having an anti-aging role by neutralizing free radicals. The precious effects of coconut oil nourish and protect the skin. Green tea and seaweed body wrapping is then applied. The used wrap is a fine powder of micronized plants, 100% natural, which becomes a fine paste by mixing with water. Seaweed contains trace elements, iodine and mineral salts that provide necessary ingredients to eliminate waste from the body. During the body wrapping, there is a gentle facial cleansing and moisturizing. First the face is cleaned and a gentle scrub is applied based on grape and green tea extract plus the glycyretic acid (licorice extract) to remove dead cells and stimulate cell regeneration to give luminosity to the skin. Secondly, a vitalizing mask is applied with lifting effect due to vitamins and ginseng. Then follows a delicate massage with a cream enriched with polyphenols and trace elements, vitamins A, E and B5, UV filter, seaweed extract and Shea oil. The procedure continues with an energizing body massage. This type of massage is deep and refreshing. It is recommended for back pain and muscle stiffness. Finally, the Spa signature perfume is applied – with one of the chosen Caudalie aromatic waters. At the end the participants drink a glass of red wine.
