Reading the other reviews, I have a different take on the separate building, The Birches. My husband uses a walker and often quaint and charming lodges and Inns have too many barriers for us. The Birches room allowed us to enjoy this beautiful place and have a safe accessible room. The Inn is lovely and very "lodgy", but still able to be accessed with a walker. The staff was top notch. Friendly and professional. The food was delicious. We enjoyed drinks at the bar, a great dinner each evening. The beach was just what one would hope for in the Adirondacks. Crisp air, clear water and of course Adirondack chairs. We will be back.

Garnet Mine Tours

Outstanding site for collecting unusually large garnets. Staff is extremely friendly and flexible, and rates are reasonable. Even the locals didn't seem to know about this place, and it offers a fantastic alternative to skiing, which seems to be the predominant attraction in the area.

My birth stone is garnet so I figured it would be fun to go to this mine since I was in the area. I had a *great* time! The owners are very friendly and know loads about garnets, this particular mine, and the history of Adirondack garnet mining. The visitor center/gift shop is full of lovely jewelry and home goods made out of garnet and other stones. When your tour starts, you get driven down to the mine, are given a quick history of Barton mine, and are then shown how to look for garnets (it's really easy.) The (raw) garnets are EVERYWHERE. Right there in the sand, and all around. I collected a 1/4 Ziploc full of stones of various sizes (some were tiny, others were as big as an eraser)--when I weighed it at the visitor center/shop, turned out I owed 27 cents for the whole lot, including taxes. The others on the tour with me were a diverse bunch--some locals, some out-of-towners, and all ages. Everyone loved it. I highly recommend checking this out! Really unusual, a lot of fun, and a great way to learn about geology
