What to do and see in North Holland Province, The Netherlands: The Best Libraries

December 12, 2021 Renato Branum

Mostly jutting northward from its largest city of Amsterdam and its capital of Haarlem, the Noord-Holland region has much more to offer beyond those two wonderful cities. At Muiden is the magnificent Muiderslot Castle, as if it stepped out of a fairy tale. Showing more wear but no less interesting is Brederode Castle at Santpoort. At Zaanstad is Zaanse Schans, one of Holland’s top tourist destinations and a family-friendly open air museum of windmills, traditional buildings, crafts and shops.

This wonderful modern library had a fantastic waterfront location near the Central Station. It is worth a visit for the architecture and for the viewing gallery on the sixth floor, which gives superb views over Amsterdam. The NEMO science centre is also very close by and also worth a look.

de Bibliotheek Amstelland

The Library is opened 7 days a week. You're welcome to enjoy the view over Stadsplein with a nice cup of coffee, to work or study with our WiFi network (free) or computers (paid), or to use our collection with Dutch and English books. Hope to see you soon!

The Bibliotheek Amstelland is a great place for those who like books and learning in general. The place is on the first floor of a central building in the shopping area. It is very agreeable, ample, well lit with natural light and it has very good collection of books and other learning materials. There areas reserved for silent research and areas where people can talk. I go for a weekly meeting with other people who are learning Dutch. It's a meeting called "taal café"(taal meaning language in Dutch), where people meet and have the support from voluntary Dutch native speakers who help with the learning of the language. This service is from the city hall and happen in the premisses of the library. There is a book shop and a nice coffee house in the ground floor.
