This not you regular zoo. If you want to see loads of animals in a short time: don't go here. It is however a themepark with animals. A fair amount of animals you can see in a natural habitat (as far as that is possible when living in captivity). The shows are a bit simple, but the kids (below 16) will love it. One day visit is more than enough and you will have seen everything there is to see. Expect some queues at the large attractions, just like in a 'real' themepark.

National Smalspoor Museum

The Industreel Smalspoor Museum (Industrial Narrow Gauge Railway Museum) is situated at a former turf cutting site and processing factory. Sounds interesting? You bet!!
The main event is a train ride around the site, with stops along the way where the driver explains a little history of the area and the role of the railway. Our driver spoke Dutch, English and German so no problem to understand his commentary. The round trip took nearly an hour and a half, very good value for 6 Euro. There's a huge collection of small locomotives of various narrow gauges, including one which children can drive round a circuit (under adult supervision) and receive a certificate to show that they've done so. The friendly driver will also allow enthusiastic adults to have a go :-).
Although not mentioned on their website, there is a spacious cafe which includes a large outdoor Seating area, where drinks and snacks are available. With good quality free wifi thrown in.
We were struck by the enthusiasm and friendliness of all the volunteer staff we met, they really seemed to enjoy what they were doing and that rubbed off on the visitors.
Overall this is a highly recommended attraction, do drop by if you're in the neighbourhood.

We had a great family time, it was extremely sunny, so we went outside. (Not only indoor). They have a K3 kids car driving area with signs and lights. Good playground and other things. Inside is cool too. Prices for food and drinks pretty steep. Not for kids over 7, to our opinion.

This is a great little place with loads to see and explore. We particularly liked the houses packed with items of Dutch life over the years. The baker's shop is definitely worth a visit to taste the freshly backed apple turnovers or raspberry tarts. There is industrial heritage, a windmill, harmonium museum (huge), stationery steam engines, a railway to ride on, boats to boat in and pancakes to sample.

Today was our second visit to the Sculpture Garden in Gees. Absolutely stunning. The collection of sculptures and works of art changes every year and only includes the top of Dutch and European artists. The layout of the garden is beautiful and very well maintained and the positioning of the sculptures is really thought through. The variations in the landscaping from wide open views to closed in Gardens surprises the visitor at every corner. A delight for photographers (no restrictions in place). Just too good to describe - go and look for yourself.

Stedelijk Museum Coevorden

We felt very welcome in this museum. The movie on the violent history of Coevorden is super. It uses a relief replica of the city as projecting screen. The language of the twelve minute movie can be set to Dutch or German, no English unfortunately. Perhaps that can be a new project for the museum.
