Hessie Trailhead

We went to Woodland Lake with our four kids under 11 and our dog. We absolutely loved it. It was so hard to leave. August turned out to be a great time of year for it. Mosquitoes weren’t bad. We went in on a Thursday had the lake to ourselves.

Caribou Ranch Open Space

Loved this hike. It was cold in the shade and there was ice and snow on most of the trail. It’s an easy hike...but long. It seems a lot longer when one is trying not to slip down on ice. I am not accustomed to ice and snow...so If someone is like me and there is ice and snow...I recommend wearing good hiking shoes and taking hiking poles. This park is closed for 2-3 months out of the year, so make sure it is open before you go. there is a bathroom at the trailhead. The trail is well marked with blue diamonds attached to trees.

Indian Peaks Wilderness, Rainbow Lakes

Reviewed By EZvisitor - Denver, United States

I played hooky from work on a hot Tuesday in July (Denver, CO) to venture with a friend to Rainbow Lakes, Indian Peak Wilderness, in Arapaho Forest about seven miles north of Nederland, Colorado. Leaving Denver around 7, we stopped in quaintly beautiful Nederland for a short break and then headed up to the trailhead. My friend drove her Toyota RAV4 and except for having to drive slowly around a few potholes, we had an easy time getting to the trailhead. I hadn't hiked for a very long time, so this easy, shady tree-lined hike, with gentle elevation gain was perfect for me and I felt rewarded each time we came to each of four pond/lakes. Bring mosquito repellant, as the lakes attract them. Probably best to take this hike from about June until October, as I understand that there is a closed gate in the wintertime. This hike would be good for anyone with sure footing, as the trail is fairly well-worn, but there is a little hop over a stream and the end of the hike up is rather boulder-y, but easy to navigate. My friend, who loves bird-watching, found several different species to observe. Along the way, sounds flowed up from a campground. I saw dogs and families on the trail. Several fisherman were spotted at the twin lakes at the top of the hike. As we sat on the boulders, overlooking the lake and enjoying the scenery of glacier, mountains, open sky with puffy clouds, eating our bagged lunches, we were visited by a very cute chipmunk wanting some treats (we did not accommodate and he scattered away). Reminder: don't feed the wildlife and leave the place as you found it or better! Light rain sprinkled us as we made our way back down to our car and we passed many more people who were headed up the mountain. At the parking lot, we noticed many more cars...quite busy, even for a Tuesday. I imagine on weekends, this could be a busy trail. Happy hiking!

Eldora Mountain Resort

Eldora is just 21 miles from Boulder and 45 miles from Denver. Avoid the stress of I-70's notorious congestion. Eldora is a locals-friendly mountain, relaxed and unpretentious. One of Colorado's best kept secrets for families. There's something for everyone - steeps, bumps, glades, terrain park, groomed corduroy for cruising. A Children's Center where learning to ski or snowboard is fun. 40km of x-country and snowshoe trails. Free close-in parking and RTD bus service that drops you 50ft from the lift.

My family and I spent one of the busiest days of the year at Eldora Ski Resort with my spouse, son, niece and nephews. We had an awesome day! Every staff member from, registration, to ski rentals, children lessons and adult snowboard instructors were personable and courteous. Annabelle assisted our large group with gear, Colleen and Derrick were snowboard instructors for our large beginner group. Every step of the way they showed patience, were full of energy and remembered everyone's names. Even staff members like Eric who stopped by midday did not hesitate to help out and remembered everyones names after a short meeting. The children's ski school exceeded my expectations. Justin and Elly were fun, helpful and easy going. My son mentioned they made learning easy. Lunch was included with the all day snow board lessons for children and staff constantly made an effort to ensure my son was getting everything he needed. Even at the end of a long busy day all staff members were helpful and full of energy to ensure every customers needs were met. I would definitely go again and am glad that we spent our first family ski trip at Eldora. The only negative comment I have is do not forget any ski gear. A few of my family members forgot clothing which is not available to rent. Items on the 50% off rack for snow pants started at $180 and gloves were $90. Beware you must purchase clothing before you go or you'll spend quite a bit to stay warm and dry!
