What to do and see in Naples, Campania: The Best Castles

December 5, 2021 Mollie Coke

Romantic Naples, two hours south of Rome, is the largest city in southern Italy. It has some of the world's best opera and theater houses and is often called an open-air museum, due to its many historic statues and monuments. Join families on promenade as the sun sets on the Bay of Naples. View finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale or revel in the art and architecture of Museo Cappella Sansevero, built in the late 1500s.

Castel dell'Ovo

There are some excellent views across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius from here including the quaint Borgo Marinari. There is also a short description of the history of the site for those who are interested. Entry is free. I particularly liked the “tame” seagull who must have featured in a thousand selfies and has worked out that all (s)he has to do is stand there and 1 in 20 people will feed her/him. Why fly for food when the food will fly to you?

Highly recommend the guided tour (I think Francesco was our guide) -- he was very animated and the tour built up to a very powerful and memorable climax in a beautiful room in the castle. This was in Italian, if he does one in English I'm sure it would be great as well (he sprinkled in many English phrases in his Italian tour). The views of the port and city are a huge bonus.

City of Naples

Reviewed By foxiess - Heathcote, Australia

Naples is the most beautiful city in the world. Goethe was right: “see Naples and then die” Sure you need to watch your belongings, however there are many cities like that around the world! Visit Spaccanapoli, museo Archeologico, Museo di Capodimonte which has a Caravaggio , Napoli Sotteranea, Pompei , Amalfi, Capri etccc. lots of amazing churches. Food is cheap and the best in Italy. People are helpful and friendly. Just watch out people at train stations and airport, they will offer to help but they will want money. Don’t wear expensive stuff and keep belongings close. You will be fine and have a ball!
