What to do and see in Nainital, Uttarakhand: The Best Nature & Parks

March 12, 2022 Venice Greaves

Natural beauty abounds in the state of Uttaranchal's Lake District. Boaters flock to hill-ringed Naini Lake, which according to mythology is one of the emerald eyes of Shiva's wife. A hike or horseback ride to the top of Naina Peak (aka China Peak), the highest point, provides stunning views of the snow-capped Himalayas. To share a prime vantage point with family members of all ages, take the aerial lift up to Snow View; there's also a small marble temple at the top dedicated to Dev Mundi.

Pangot and Kilbury Bird Sanctuary

Reviewed By Toppopankaj - Gurugram (Gurgaon), India

Had visited this Bird.sanctuary in March 2018. It's a must visit for any bird lover. Infact Pangot is such a small place, even in the present day that it's does not even have a barber shop in the village. Having said that it has atleast 20 hotels where you can choose to stay. It's a pretty offbeat location. Cellphone connectivity is an issue there, there are no fuel stations. The village has only two grocery shops, if I remember correctly. In short if you are going to Pangot for a birding trip, pack properly. If you forget anything you will not be able to buy a second one at Pangot. The most important thing however, which you should not forget at any cost, is to get your fuel tank filled either at Nainital or at Kaladunghi. And if you are going to Pangot for birding (why else will you go to Pangot? It's famous only for birds) ensure that you book your guide, in advance. Without a proper guide you will be lost in the jungles around Pangot. Lastly while birding is at the heart of Pangot, don't forget you can amazing views of the entire Himalayan range from a point before Cheer Point, from where you can get good landscape shots. And when going for birding carry a super telephoto lens (minimum 400mm) else you will be left wanting for extra reach. Remember birds in this part of the world are small. So they move very fast. Hence click at a high shutterspeed and be very alert. What all this remoteness of the place means that you can still see birds in the pristine forests around Pangot. Also no matter which season you are going, carry warm clothes. Pangot can get really cold. It receives snow in winters. So happy birding.

Nainital Zoo

We had a magical experience at the zoo . its a must visit If you are visiting nainital with kids. Its a small zoo but you get to see good number of animals. We visited in October and were greeted by cool and misty weather even at noon time due to the heights which added to the charm. Be prepared to walk a lot inside the zoo as it is built on a hill. There is a paid shuttle service from the base of the hill till the zoo gate and I would strongly recommend that you take it especially if you are traveling with kids. Also, I would not recommend it for people over sixty years due to the elevation.

Location: - Entrance situated at the end of Mall road (Main high street of Nainital City) Commute: - One can walk uphill of 2 kms for main entrance - One can hire an auto running exclusively on the Zoo route (Inexpensive) Zoo: - Surprisingly I found it to be at par of any mini zoo Internationally - Very neat and clean - Ticket system also pretty organised - Wide variety of animals, birds and other elements one finds in a zoo - Seems the authorities take good care of the wild life as were healthy beings - Merchandise availability to take back souvenirs - Lots of vantage points for a good click and memories Minuses - Be ready to trek up hill inside the zoo as well as its a hilly terrain - No good Eateries (But on Mall road ample of options available at 2 kms) Happy journey!
