I loved this place even though many of the buildings were scaffolded or otherwise undergoing repair from the major earthquake a few years ago. Get the brochure- there are temples dating from centuries ago, mixed in with shops and restaurants. Peddlers are mostly bearable, with a few that won't go away. There's a huge variety of goods for sale- knitted goods, handmade paper, spices, T-shirts, "singing bowls" and other musical instruments as well as the usual jewelry, cashmere and pashmina. Even though this was the last day of our tour and our group had done more than its share to improve the economy in Nepal we still found things to buy!
Get the yogurt at Cafe Neuatapola- it's lightly sweetened and heavenly.

Nagarkot Panoramic Hiking Trail

Reviewed By EkeneE - London, United Kingdom

Did a nice hike between the villages of Nagarkot ending in Changu Narayan temple. The walk was well worth it because you crossed many tiny settlements and villages where you could observe village life (e.g. Old lady making traditional rice wine, guy taking a nap in a temple, father kite flying with the kids, lady beating out soya beans, corn trying on the veranda of a house). You also got good views of Kathmandu valley as well. Pretty much anybody of any age can do this hike as it it pretty undemanding to the body

Changu Narayan

Reviewed By Otmar G - Feldkirch, Austria

This is not a very big temple area, but it's a gem recognized as UNESCO world heritage. As it is hidden in the hills, it escaped destruction in the 15th century. It is the oldest temple in Nepal that has survived in its original state against all odds and dates back as far as the fourth century. It is a square building with beautifully carved beams under the two-storey roof. There are bells and columns and altars, and you can walk around the temple and admire the artwork on the walls.

Then, you will pass through a serene walk inside pine forest with occasional bird watching opportunity as well. There is also a monastery inside the forest for Buddhist retreat though permission required to enter. The trail will firstly passes through small bush followed by two countryside villages of thakurigaun and gurung gaun. Gaun means village in Nepal before returning back to town. Though we could not venture into this palace, just walking past it was an experience in itself because of the intricacy and finesse in the carving and sculptures on the outside. Every little square inch is filled with legend and art and makes for marvellous photographs at all angles.
