This Winery is a MUST stop in Murphys. Do not follow the GPS. You will get there but the road is terrible. Go to Murphys and follow the signs off main street. Much shorter. Great wines and the museum is fantastic with lots of mining equipment to look at. Great gift shop. Great place for the kids and they have entertainment so look for the schedule. Tasting room is huge and open daily with a fee and is refundable with purchase next to the Great fireplace.

Only a few minutes from downtown Murphy's, can't believe we have never been here in all the years of wine tasting trips! First, do not go if you have wine tasting already! It is definitely not for individuals with weak knees, problems breathing, or problems with small, low, tight places. With that said, I went to celebrate my 55th birthday and there were people of all ages, etc. I am active, work on my feet for 8 hrs a day and am also 35 lbs overweight. Now I am on a diet! I made it down pretty well. It was the climb out! At some points the stairs were like climbing a ladder and I had to rely on my arm strength to pull me up the stairs. Small children were on our tour and the ones under 6 were tired, I watched a young mother carry a 3-4 yr old boy up those stairs, she was struggling as she could not hold the rails and him at the same time. Wear good shoes, NO flip flops. Now, it was Beautiful!! Amazing to see!! and I am super happy I braved it! Worth the sore thighs and triceps I have today!

The museum is located on the "main drag" in this touristy small town along with shops and places to eat. You'll get a good feel for the local history.

Hovey Winery

Chuck Hovey is a legendary winemaker in the area having been the winemaker for more than a handful of the wineries in the region and perhaps almost singlehandedly out Murphys on the map.

Prices are reasonable -- without having to join a wine club -- something that can't be aid for many wineries!

I'd be inclined to buy more wines from here if the staff were friendlier. I've been here twice and both times the staff ESPECIALLY the boss/owner (whatever he is) have been pretty yuck. Fortunately the wine makes up for the lack of service and friendliness. I likely wont return particularly given Murphys is a wine Mecca!!!

I'm sure you'll find a great wine here that you'll enjoy. The staff at this winery could not be nicer, or more friendly. We last visited during the Calaveras Wine Passport Weekend and their winery could not have been more welcoming. They had it in a separate area from the main tasting room, and their food selection was oustanding.

We've stopped several times in the past and have always enjoyed the experience. They have a very nice gift soft too, with several unusual items on display. A really nice experience. You'll definitely enjoy the beautiful grounds.

We love coming to Stevenot. Lorraine is friendly and truly enjoys her job. Our favorite wine is the Chardonnay which we discovered at a local restaurant. They have 2 Chardonnays--oak and stainless. Both are great and reasonable prices. Love the Barbera too. It's always appreciated when you can taste wine while sitting in a comfortable bar stool.

This is a unique wine-tasting bar on Main Street in Murphys. This California Gold Country venue is really great for their selection of unusual artisan cheeses and organic wines. Lavender adorns the walls and is their theme. They specialize in Rhone varietals and produce hand crafted, unfiltered wines. They sell their wines, cheeses, and lavender gift items. You can buy a membership that provides a discount on their products and complimentary tasting and a tour of their winery.

Relaxing area with shops and restaurants on Main Street just a short walk. Plenty of shade trees to relax under. A cute gazebo to relax by in warmer months, often with musicians playing a variety of music. There is a playground for children, Angels Creek, with a bridge and picnic tables to have a nice picnic lunch on."

Great spot, great wines. Lovely people, lovely grounds. French woman married to the winemaker makes sure his wines are perfected to the French palate -- not hit you over the head abrasive American style.
