SHORT SHEEP Micro-Winery

Encounter Authentic Handpicked & Handcrafted wines. Join us for a wine tasting and conversation in the Micro-Winery!

Reviewed By ianmacd44 - Griffith, Australia

We were at Short Sheep again on our annual trip to Mudgee. As previously, it is an enjoyable cellar door, with interesting wines from which I always find something worth purchasing. This place is a great contrast to some of the bigger wineries of the area. The cellar door is appropriately small with a chance to take a peek into the winery. Sue and Tony are great on their ability to share what they are doing with the wines. It will be on our list again for our next visit to Mudgee.

Gooree Cellar + Pantry

Gooree is home to award winning Australian wine, Wagyu beef & champion racehorses. Our Cellar and Pantry is located in the centre of Mudgee and provides wine tastings, along with locally grown Wagyu beef and fresh produce available to purchase.

The pantry provides great local produce and wine tastings. It is a favourite place to pop in to get great 'foodie' gifts from sauces, chocolate, pork crackle, pistachios and fresh produce. The gentleman that assists is an absolute delight and is always extremely helpful. A joy to grab some favourite nibbles off the main street in Mudgee. If you are interested in a wine tasting, these have been available in the past, however may be on hold due to Covid.

Our tools of trade are old world, antique approaches including foot treading and hand plunging. We hand make red, white and rose by blending passion and intuition with science. We recently had a family holiday in Mudgee. Although no wine expert, amongst the half dozen wineries we visited this was one of the stand outs. Beautiful whites, reds, hospitality and setting. We ended up purchasing a dozen of their wines. We found it a more authentic winery compared to some that are more modern/contemporary and they seem to focus on the quality of their wine.

I called whilst having coffee in town to see if they were open due to Covid and was cheerfully told to come on up. I was lucky enough to have the winemaker, Tim, take me through tasting their wines. There was a family leaving as I arrived so I was the only person there, I expected to be rushed though as I was on my own but no, the customer service was exceptional. Tim is really knowledgable, patiently answering all my questions so I ended up learning a lot during my visit, accompanied by the cute jack russell who hates to be left out. I came away with bottles of the rose and chardonnay plus a note of which locations near me in Sydney stock their wine to buy more when I run out. Definitely add this to your list of wineries to visit in Mudgee.

We were taken here as part of our Trike tour. The tasting room is surrounded by giant barrels and we sat at a table and was served the wine by a very pleasant and welcoming young lady. We tasted about 6 wines including 2 ports but could have hade more, we didn't have to worry about driving. We purchased a bottle of tawny Port. We were surprised at how many people were there and on a Tuesday. I enjoyed the nibbles and my wife loved the pink port. The atmosphere is excellent.

Burnbrae Wines

Burnbrae has been in our family since 2004 because we just love wine. Burnbrae is one of the oldest wineries in Mudgee being established in 1968 and since then we've produced some truly cracking wines.

We chanced a table downstairs from the tasting area- on our own. So quiet overlooking the lawn. Unable to taste wine as it was fully booked. That was ok. Instead we enjoyed a wine, a delicious Antipasto platter and a local beer- 548 lager.
